X-Files: finish the series? (spoilers)

During its initial run, I watched this show maybe 15 or 20 times. I always thought it was a cool show, but I’ve never been the type to make time to watch a TV show religiously.

Several months back, my girlfriend (who hadn’t seen the show any more than I had) and I decided to watch the series from the beginning via Netflix streaming. We got all suckered into it, thought the ongoing storyline was awesome, etc. About a month ago, somewhere in Season 7, we lost interest. We talked about it, and decided the intrigue was pretty much gone - the Syndicate had been wiped out, Mulder’s sister’s disappearance was apparently tied up (in a lame way), the Smoking Man isn’t much of an enigma anymore, blah blah blah. The only loose end I was looking forward to was watching Mulder finally kill that punk Crycek, but I found out it doesn’t even happen that way(!).

So, I’m wondering… did we make the right choice? Is it worth sticking out the remaining 2 1/2 seasons and second movie, or would we just be bored? Especially considering that Mulder makes few appearances in the last two seasons, anyway?

I watched it religiously for most of its original run. I gave up some time after Mulder left. I tuned in for the final episode, which was another big disappointment. I watched the first part of the second movie (mostly because a friend had told me it was good). I thought it was awful and gave up.

I have no regrets. I’m curious to see what others have to say but I don’t know anyone who liked the final season.

You know … I don’t love the last couple of seasons, and I understand why so many people dislike it, etc. Still, I don’t hate it, and I appreciate what they tried to do with the new agents. I don’t regret watching it through to the end, and even seeing the second movie. FYI the second movie is not about the mytharc, it’s more of a “monster of the week.”

Definitely finish season 7. It has some of my favorite episodes, actually.

8 and 9? I re-watch them, but honestly, it’s not a big deal if you don’t. Mulder barely appears and the mythology is irrelevant.

I don’t hate them, though. However, you could skip to the final episode just for some wrap up(it does not wrap up stuff, though).

The last years were well done, but the one episode regarding Dogett’s missing son had me so upset (for weeks, as I was a new dad then), that I could never bring myself to rewatch those episodes.

I watched most of the X-files but meh… my feelings are similar to those already given.

But if you want something like X-Files but done much better, (IMO) watch Fringe. (3 seasons so far, new one coming up in a month or so)

True, but Supernatural is even better and still on.

Never even heard of it. <Looks it up; programs it on DVR> I’ll check it out. Thanks!

<somewhat hopes that it isn’t good, so I don’t get stuck on another show>

I kind of agree. There are of course some stand out episodes in the latter seasons, but they don’t work very well as a continuation of the the show they were born from. I would say wait and see if they make a third movie that ties of the mytharc - if that happens it would probably be worth it to have a marathon in anticipation of the big wrap up. Otherwise I’d just watch a handful of key episodes to get the gist.

Personally I loved the second movie. It was more a monster of the week / relationship / set up for the finale film which I guess pissed off some fans, but I thought it was great. I think people will like it more if a third and final movie giving them the mytharc wrap up comes out.

Watching X-Files not knowing where it was headed, and reveling in the non-arc episodes (was there ever a better episode on ANY series than “Humbug” or “Home”?), was huge fun. Watching it already knowing where it was headed? Not so fun.

I don’t think I’d finish out the Doggett/Reyes era…
