X-Files - I just watched the pilot and I'm either addicted or annoyed...help

If they see the finale, they won’t need to see the rest of the series  Who was that for? " If you stopped watching seven seasons ago, here’s a recap." That was one of the most disappointing finales ever, maybe because the show was too impressive to go out on such a whimper. I’m still hoping for more movies to “fix it” but we’ll have to see what happens. Hell, if they’re going to make a Firefly movie, and that had far fewer fans than the last seasons of the X-files…

Two reasons, as I see it. Firstly, I believe stepping in and shutting down the X-Files would have brought unwanted attention upon their group. It’s made clear later that the Syndicate went to great lengths to keep themselves unseen. Their secretiveness was one of their greatest strengths. Secondly, if such a group was to step out and shut down a unit that investigated certain cases, attention would be drawn to the cases. I think having a crackpot like Mulder (whose family was part of the government conspiracy) sticking his nose into things was preferable to having many other potentially more credible investigators sticking their noses into things.

Not in the satisfying, “Oh, so that’s it!” kind of way. The pieces of the puzzle don’t fall into place with any kind of speed, and even once they do, they’re not indisputable. For example, when we really find out what happened to Samantha, only Mulder witnesses the telling events. And the nature of the event is not the kind that leaves documentation around, nor does Mulder have the foresight to have a video camera with him. Many of the events down to what you believe happened, based on undocumentable evidence.

The show seemed to lose itself after season 7 or so. It felt like although one of its principals was leaving, the producers didn’t want to quit the show after finally having gone mainstream after being a cult favorite for so long. It felt like they didn’t really know what direction to take it, and so devised the Scully-pregnancy thing. Not that it was a bad direction, but it certainly felt spontaneous. I too don’t feel that seasons 8-9 were terrible. They were just not what you thought the show would turn into.

If you decide to stick with the show, I strongly recommend you watch the episodes in order so that you see how the conspiracy unfolded from the POV of Mulder and Scully. If you keep thinking about the many types of aliens, shady government types, and monsters-of-the-week, you’ll get confused and impatient. Remember, the show lasted for 9 years, so it’s not going to be a quickly digested.
