That’s what a Dopefest is. People who know each other (primarily) through the online SDMB, getting together IRL.
Generally it’s for fun only, with no obligations or lofty expectations. Attendees are as varied as the SDMB itself.
Dopefests are proposed in MPSIMS, and a date and location are agreed upon. Sometimes they are proposed because someone is going to be in a particular area of the country at a particular time. Other times it just feels like it’s time to meet.
Traditionally, reservations are made in the name of Cecil Adams – just in case he should show up.
IIRC, there is a Dopefest scheduled for Vancouver, Canada this summer, and I’m looking to host one in Langley, WA in September.
Tentative date for the Vancouver DopeFest is July 28. Several of us are going to come up on the train, I think. So…mark your calendar…details will be posted later!
No date has yet been set for the Whidbye Island soiree, at least as far as I know…but I’ve been to the Dog House, and it is sure to be a hoot!

Actually, I never saw When Harry Met Sally but I know what you mean. One question: IIRC? I know many others but that’s a new one for me. Matti
