Well, now we have a dedicated forum, it would seem rude not to use it.
Can anyone help me with the combat aspect of this game? I am ok with the trading and recently purchased my first station (solar power plant), but my combat skills are lacking. I even purchased a joystick to aid me, but no dice. I am flying an Argon Nova, with 2 25MW shields and 2 alpha HEPT’s at the front, with one at the back. I am actually able to kill things with this ship, but only if I ram the buggers. Anyone have any tips for me?
Hi - one of my all-time favourite games and series.
Once you get into the correct mind-set combat becomes pretty easy. You have to think about it as WW1 dog fighting and use your sight settings to lead your target.
I can’t remember the precise details but there is technology that allows you a lead-point indicator option.
My tactic is generally to come in at an angle and round about the 800 metre mark ‘walk’ the shells onto the target.
Best source of advice is the egosoft game forums though. Plenty of vets there.
I envy you - you have X3 to play after and by that time the x3- Terran threat standalone will be out and in true egosoft fashion patched to playability (usually about 9 months after release  )
I can see this working when I am attacking a slower opponent such as a TS or whatever, but what if the target is way faster than you? Does the same tactic apply?
If they are faster than you get their attention with a mosquito missile. Anything faster than you falls into the ‘mostly harmless’ category and you can safely go head to head with them.
Alternative tactic - see what gate they are heading for and jumpdrive to it. Then either go head to head or ambush them the other side of the gate.
And let the strafe drive be your friend - the enemy seems to be fooled by it. You can even exploit its ridiculous speed ability and just strafe sideways at great speed to catch them.
My pleasure. The original X game got me into writing. My ‘Rogue’ series is on the X2 disc and I was roped into rewriting the German novel into English.
Elite - I so loved that game. Played it in so many incarnations, up to Frontier and FFE. Much as I love the X series with all it’s fleet and commercial empire building I really miss the one man against a big hostile universe gameplay of the Elite series.
If I remember correctly the Argon Nova can mount Mass Drivers. They fire really fast and ignore shields, they completely rip apart the small, fast frigates that you can’t catch. The only downside is the cargo space needed to hold the ammo.
I hope I’m not forgetting. I’ve been playing X3 a lot and might be confused.
Also, if you put a IRE in your back turret and set it to missile defence; things will go much smoother against the missile spamming enemies too.
I have both combat software’s and the video enhancement goggles, but im not seeing that little circle that tells you where to aim for deflection shooting. anyone know how to turn it on?
I think pressing ‘K’ toggles the aim assist. Keep pressing it, you will notice none, one or two bars appear on the bottom right of your target HUD. No bars means it’s turned off, one bar means it will show the lead indicator and two bars will automatically correct your aim, so long as you’re at least pretty close.
