Well, I finally got to play Halo for the first time today. What an amazing design. I suck balls at FPS. In fact, I will probably not play the game thru to the end because I suck so bad. My stomach hurts, to the point of holding back my puke from the sense of motion in all FPS games. Its a drag because they are fun when I can play them for a few minutes, but then I get sick. Anyone else have this problem?
But did anyone else think that the idea of that planet shaped like a, well, a Halo was extremely cool? When I landed on the planet for the first time I just stood around looking at the sky and looking around for a good 15 minutes. To see something like that in real life would be surreal. I wonder if it is even possible for something like to exist in the universe.
And the sound in the game is fricking DA BOMB! Especially the title screen. The environment design in that game is awsome.
Well, I am sure this thread will sink like a stone because everyone is sick of this game by now, but I just got to play it and I wanted to throw out my acknowledgement of a job well done.
Halo has some of the best design ever. The story and gameplay mesh seamlessly. I also remember being amazed when first landing on Halo. I don’t get the nausea problem, which is a good thing because if you think Halo is bad stay away from Quake III.
On the NES, one of my favorite games was Contra. Simply because you could have two players on the same screen, fighting the bad guys at the same time.
So when my housemate and I found out you could do that, (And in FP) we had to grab it.
Much like you, he and I stood there just looking around at the world for a good ten minutes. Awesome layout.
Then the intense fun of actually PLAYING the game. Usually I drive the warthog, and he is the gunner. Plus the tactics we learned from playing SWAT 3 came in very handy when on foot, and clearing a room. I could go on and on…
Quite possibly the best game ever made for the 20-something-bachelor-multiplayer-beer-in-hand set.
I have not played this game but I have to echo stinkpalm in the nausea problem with FPS games. I break out in sweat and get a sick feeling like I just rode a rollercoaster ten times in a row. I wish I could play them but it just isnt worth the discomfort for me.
If you’re mutants, then I’m one of you. I get the FPS motion sickness as well. In fact, I started a thread on it a number of months ago here.
And yes, Halo is an amazing design (even if the basic planet idea is copped from Ringworld), and I wish I could play it, or even just watch other people play it.
Actually, it’s taken from the Orbital idea in the Culture series, which was in turn taken from Ringworld… (yeah, I’m anal, but I’m also a Halo freak…)
A lot of people accuse Halo of being “repetitive”… I couldn’t disagree more. Sure, a lot of the environments look the same, but you know what? The place is a giant, artificially-constructed habitat… I’m sure that there was a lot of standardization in the plans. The true replayability comes from the fact that every individual encounter with the enemy is slightly different, requiring slightly different tactics to deal with.
Hell, I’ve gone through the game at least ten times, and I’m STILL loving every minute of it.
