XBox problem

All right, I’ve got a problem with my XBox. The first, not a 360. It’s probably about 6 years out of warranty by this point, but it’s been a good soldier, so before I retire it I figure I’ll give the board a shot. The problem is that the system appears to think the eject button is continually being pressed, which it isn’t. The eject button mechanically is the same as it ever was; it’s not stuck or anything. If I leave it plugged in and turn it off, it will wait a couple ticks, then fire up and eject the disc tray. If I press the eject button, it doesn’t do a damn thing. If I press the power button, it shuts the disc tray and powers off, then starts humming a few seconds later and fires up again. I tried to play Madden just now, and it ejected the tray midgame, which hadn’t happened before (Trotter was about to blow up Julius Jones, too… I’m just saying, it was going to be a monster hit).

Anyway, before I drop the $90 or whatever a new old XBox will run me these days, is there anything I can try? Like I said, it’s at least six years old, so opening it up and tinkering is sort of a no-lose situation for me, except for the fact that I’m not at all proficient in matters mechanical and electronic, so I’d need it explained to me on a Pictionary level or below. Preferably below.

If you can get the thing open, get a can of tuner/contact spray cleaner and squirt a bit of it into and onto the actual switch (by this, I mean the part with the actual electrical contacts, not the lever or pushrod mechanism that links the switch to the button on the case) and press it repeatedly several times. If, as it sounds, the problem is a dirty and sticking intermittent switch, this should help clean it out. If not, well, I guess you’ve got nothing to lose since it’s apparently on the way out.
