XCOM: Enemy unkown

It’s only two weeks away! AND a demo is out on Steam right now!

I’ve been listening to a bunch of podcast appearances by the lead designer and producer of the game, aside form being extremely personable and fun to listen to, they really do a good job of selling the game.

Anyone else interested in this Resurrection? I actually missed the original XCOM, but I played similar games, and the premise of tactical, turned based combat with agents that you build up, and could permanently die, well, that’s just right up my alley.

I can’t wait, I don’t sit down and play video games much anymore but I can make an exception for this one.

It’s been sitting in my Amazon wishlist for months.

I have only looked at it a little, but is it not random anymore? In the Youtube preview I saw they were talking about avoiding “story spoilers” which would only seem to make sense if the missions are scripted.

I believe the single player has a narrative to ground the combat scenarios, but how you perform in those missions, as well as many of the options you take will change how other missions play out or even if they are available at all.

I’m not sure just how random other elements are however.

Might want to watch the live stream from Gamespot tonight (I think it’s runing live now actually) to see if they cover this question.

I’ve mentioned it before, but I thought the original X-COM was only good for a couple of replays. Once I realised that you could trivially blow the snot out of everything with enough Blaster Bombs, there didn’t seem to be much point in replaying it.

The new version will probably avoid that issue, but that’s why I don’t have a lot of nostalgia associated with the name X-COM.

I can’t believe this is $50.

Why not?

I saw a developer-led demo of this at PAX East and it looked amazing. I know the rest of you will probably be playing this on your PCs, but I’m very seriously considering the Xbox 360 version.

Because it looks like a budget title put together in the wake of the disappoint over the new direction of the other XCOM game.

Yeah looking forward to it. I actually pre-ordered it, the first time I’ve ever done that for a game. The RPS reviews seem so enthusiastic, plus the chance of a free copy of Civ 5 if there are enough pre-orders was tempting. I’ve also just realised that this is the first full price game I’ve bought since Skyrim came out last year. Everything else has been either budget indie, Steam/Gog sales or iOS games.

I watched the hour long gameplay teaser a few weeks ago and it seemed fun. The only downside is that I end a 10 day holiday on the 8th, so I’ll have to play around work. Damn you First World Problem!

Well, from what I’ve seen they did an incredible job with the console version. Obviously certain interactions are quicker with mouse and keyboard vs gamepad, but console gamers are probably used to that by now.

But other than a few graphics extras, it looks pretty much on par. Price ($30 something bucks at green man gaming- $50 on Steam vs $60 on console) and the fact that it allows gamepad use on PC might sway you over, if the PC version is something you could play.

Really? Have you tried the demo? I see plenty of polish in this game.

It’s really more of a matter of scope than polish, I think.

Looking forward to this one, already pre-ordered on GMG. I still play the original X-Com via Steam and it’s still fun.

My PC is a Best Buy special precisely because I do all my gaming on my consoles. So Xbox 360 it is for me. But interestingly enough, the devs were using an Xbox 360 controller to run the demo for the crowd. I think they wanted to show everyone what was possible with the console version.

Pre-purchased on Steam a few weeks ago and definitely looking forward to it. Haven’t checked out the demo but I’ve seen some of the videos of the game on IGN and Gamespy and it looks pretty good. Can’t wait to check out the ant farm.

I am so looking forward to this and I am pre-purchasing it as well. However, I have no idea when I will be getting around to play it. GW2 still has my complete focus.

I played the original all the way through twice (which, seeing as it was such a long game, represents quite a significant chunk of my life). I did the same with Apocalypse too. I must admit though, I’m not completely sold on this version yet. I tried to play apocalypse recently, and found it mind-numbingly slow. Strategy games have moved on a lot since the original, and I’m not sure this will have the same impact as previous games.

That said, I hope they’ve found a way to make it work. The premise is a lot of fun, and having a game whose lifespan is measured in months rather than hours will be interesting.

It’s also a hell of a lot less relevant in a turn based title. Not that I’m not buying it on the PC, but…

How exactly are you able to judge the scope of the game? o.o

Anyway, super excited for this. Going to try the demo tonight.
