XCOM: Enemy unkown

Glad you like it. Something you may want to know - there is a bug where the game reduces the difficulty level of reloaded games. You may want to know that before you finish all of the game and feel bad when you realise you may only have been doing well because the AI was switching itself off.

It’s dated. The graphics are well below current standards. There are strange bugs which allow shooting or walking through walls. (My favorite is standing on a bail of hay in a barn and poking your head through the floor.) And it’s great.

On that note, I choose to view the fact that X-Com:EU allows people and aliens to shoot through walls as a loving tribute to the classic game rather than the bizarre bug that it probably is.

Are you sure it actually allows that? I ask because I haven’t noticed it. Sometimes there is no direct LOS between unanimated toons but I got the impression that the game simulates the toons intermittently poking around/over obstacles. Which would be why two enemies on opposite sides of a building each on a corner can see and shoot each other.

Yeah, the “shooting through walls” thing is a product of the shooting animation (can you turn that off? I can totally do without it; it’s cool the first few times but slows the game down.) I’ve never actually see a shot made with an impossible line of sight; it’s just that with the clunky animation, the shooter will step away from his position and behind an object.

In the original, some of the shots actually were from impossible lines of sight. But then you could shoot blind in that game if you wanted.

You mean the cutscenes when someone delivers a death blow? Yes, it’s possible to turn that off. In the options menu, if I remember correctly.

Is it me or do the “new enemies discovered” cutscenes taper off? If not, can that be turned off?

RickJay,

Some of it is a factor of the “ducking around a corner” factor, but I’ve pulled off some shots that I shouldn’t be able to. I’ve also had floaters appear in the middle of an undamaged roof or been able to shoot them through the middle of undamaged walls. The issue is especially bad with floaters, so I suspect it’s a issue with the way the game deals with enemies that are not on the ground.

Depends which version of the game he’s playing. If it’s the DOS version, then the bug’s probably still there ; but I seem to recall the Windows executable has that one fixed - at least the one they sell through Steam.

In any event, there’s a third party fixpack out there to solve the issue regardless of version as well as iron out the more egregious bugs and issues (like locking yourself out of the endgame by not doing the exact research in the exact order or failing to capture the elusive… ethereal commander, was it ?) and streamlining some of the tedium (e.g. finally remembering inventory loadouts, wheee !).

I would link to that fix right now… except I don’t remember its name, usually get it through the Something Awful X-Com thread, and the SA forum is currently on one of their recurring “pay for an account or you can’t even read the posts, bitch” funding drive phases, so. Those usually only last a couple weeks though, as soon as it’s over I’ll be sure to get with the linking (provided someone else hasn’t beaten me to the punch)

I think the line of sight code is still a little sketchy. I think they patched it a bit with the last patch, but there’s probably still room for improvement. x.x

One serious problem I’m running into with the game, however is with saved games. For some reason my saved games keep disappearing. I’m playing through a new game, and I’ll save off before a mission, then try and reload and poof…no save for it. Or the saved game files will be all out of order, instead of the latest saved game at the top. It was just annoying before, but tonight I’ve lost all of my recent saved game files…I don’t have anything for the last few days. That’s the first time I’ve lost a number of saved game files and that even getting out of the game and back in didn’t at least somewhat correct the problem. I have no idea what’s going on, but I’m seriously pissed at this point, as it looks like I’ll have to back track to a saved game that’s days old.

Anyone else having this issue…and, if so, is there some fix or some way I can find those saved games somewhere??

You’re not playing ‘Ironman’ are you?

Gods know. I’m not that much of a masochist. :stuck_out_tongue: No, I’m playing Classic mode which seems more challenging than Normal so far…and plenty challenging enough for me, especially when my saved games disappear. The latest saved game I have atm is from Sunday night unfortunately. I hate replaying missions I’ve already done, but at least the save is right after I finished taking down the alien base and preventing 3 countries from leaving the X-COM program, which would have been bad. The base is a bitch, especially at my current tech level and resources.

Ugh…hate the iPad some times. That SHOULD have been ‘gods no’. :smack:

Relax they are still there  The thing is, you, like me, is a compulsive saver, and XCOM:EU for all its glory, tends to freak out when it has more than a 100 or so save files in the save game folder.

Two fixes: Ingame-just scroll down and delete a couple of old save files -XCOM wil refresh the list and you will see the newest save games at the top again. This soultion will not, however, last long. Unless you have the patience to delete a lot of save games one at the time.

Better solution: Go to your save game folder (C:\users\appdata\xcom eu\save games if memory serves), and move (or delete if you dont worry about old saves) to a different folder, all but tha newest 20 or so save files. Then repeat this once in a while. (Note, I’ve only tried this while not running the game, don’t know if XCOM throws a fit if you do this Alt+tabbed).

I only got my one save game file in the list. Are you folks running it with “automatic save” feature on?

Does the game save it’s file locally, or on the “Steam cloud”?

Yes, I’m definitely a compulsive saver. Thanks for the tip…I’ll definitely go in and move all of my first game files (or maybe just delete them) and a bunch of the early second game files. It would be nice if I could get those saves back though, since I still haven’t caught back up to where I was on Sunday.

Yeah, all your saves should still be there - they don’t get deleted, just hidden when there are to many. You might have to sort by date, and then you probably have some newer save games (the once were you picked up from Sunday) at the top of the list, and then the saves you’re missing further down. (The are all named SaveXX, so you’ll only have the datestamp to go by to sort them out).

Oh, by the way - I completely misremembered the location. For me (Win 7) it’s C:\Users\abel29a\Documents\my games\XCOM - Enemy Unknown\XComGame\SaveData.

Had an interesting clusterexpletive last night - a bomb-defusing mission in a Japanese meat-packing plant. I wiped the map, then defused the bomb and saw off the counterattack. It was a glorious victory in a panicky part of the world; four aliens stunned and ready for pick-up and only superficial wounds suffered. My best medic would be out for a few days, but that’s nothing compared to the rewards about to shower on my plucky crew.

But the map seems to think that there’s at least one more cluster of aliens out there. I don’t think that there can be - I’ve combed every room of both buildings, both floors, roofs and all, three times and I can’t find anyone hiding. There’s no sound being made by the aliens if there are any out there.

The only thing that the game’ll let me do is abort the mission, but that’ll not only lose me the captives but also China and Japan from the alliance. I’m not keen on that. But I’ve only got one save of this game and it’s on the map and re-playing from there has the same problem.

I’m pretty sure that there’s no other alien on the map. Maybe I hadn’t cleared the map before defusing the bomb and a leftover cluster’s not triggering, but I can’t seem to do much about it except restarting the game and blowing 15 hours or so.

Has anyone run into something like this? Know where the bad guys might be hiding on the meatpacking map? Have any idea how to resurrect an overwritten save? How to force a win condition?

I played for the first time tonight. What’s the meaning of the circle underneath characters being yellow, or your own ‘shield cover’ turning yellow for that matter?

If your shield is yellow, it means that you’re flanked (which is actually worse than being in no cover at all).
