xfinity voice modem

I am thinking about buying rather than leasing a voice modem. Looking around I see it has to be eMTA. Some say it has to be bought from best buy with a comcast connection. What is the story on this, as in, why can’t I just buy any eMTA modem over the internet?

Personally I wouldn’t buy anything from Best Buy. No, you don’t need to buy it from them, or any other particular vendor. You do have to get one that is compatible with Comcast’s network. Here is their approved list:

Great information, thanks.

Now, for a related question, I can purchase an older DOCIS 2.0 Modem for much less than a newer DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Since this is only for the telephone, does this make any difference to me. I know the current modem supplied by Comcast is DOCIS 2.0.

Comcast is phasing out support for DOCSIS 1.0 and 2.0 modems. I received a letter from them last month informing me that I would have to upgrade mine. I just purchased a DOCSIS 3.0 modem a few days ago and installed it.

You can check with customer service to see how much longer they are supporting DOCSIS 2.0 in your area, but I wouldn’t buy one. They may end-of-life it before you make up the cost difference of owning vs. renting.

I’ll save my rant against Comcast/Xfinity and their poor/overpriced service for another thread.
