If it’s any consolation every minor community on the Internet probably thinks it’s about them.
Do those other communities start threads with titles like, “when did you realize you were smarter than everyone else?”
Sadly, yes. Though they usually phrase it more like “When did you realize that your acceptance of whatever the community is about made you a better person than all those peons out there who don’t know we exist.”
It’s obviously not “about us”. It just fits so many of us.
If I had to assign a source, I’d bet it was mostly autobiographical.
I showed it to my wife, who laughed and laughed, and I asked, “Is this relationship really all that common?” and she said, “Probably, yeah.”

Every year I try to make the same new year’s resolution: stop bickering on the internet.
This year, when we were talking about our resolutions, my wife said “Honey, it’s an election year. Maybe you should wait until next year to stop bickering on the internet.”
I just sent the link to my husband, who is a member of a different board, and often comes to bed late because someone was wrong on the internet. It really isn’t about Dopers.
And there’s NOTHING pretty about a geekfight!
OTOH, xkcd’s author was a Doper, at least briefly.
Ah, here we go. I see he somehow managed to get himself banned.
I don’t think that was the author of XKCD. Just some troll who swiped the username.
You could be right. I thought when he first showed up here that he said something about being the author, and that he came here after he was studying his server logs and noticed a lot of traffic coming from here.
I might be thinking of a different webcomic author. I know the author of Multiplex showed up here under those circumstances. And actually, I’m kind of surprised that the Questionable Content guy hasn’t shown up here, given how much we’ve been talking about QC.
