xkcd comic about so-called 'humour'
I eagerly await the next 16 people who are planning to quote this post and enter “+1” and “This.”

“You don’t have to be a smartass to post here, but it helps!”

There’s something about putting comics on the Internet that makes people like them even when they’re remarkably lacking in funny.
“+1” instead of “I agree.”
At least we don’t have the folks complainin’ about how long the threads take to download over dialup.

Oh..and +1, I agree.

Yes, all the people who like XKCD and have posted about it repeatedly in the last six months or so are merely doing it to annoy you. We don’t find it funny in the least.

I’m sowwy :frowning:
It can be used for that, but most people (at least on the non-dope) will put “QFT” (Quoted for Truth)
Hmm, I was under the impression that the original use of QFT was to preserve some amount of text in a post, particularly something stupid and/or inflammatory, in order to prevent the original poster from editing the post and thereby vanish the stupid and/or inflammatory quote down the memory hole. Am I on the crack here?
Whatever the origin, I’d like to take a moment to say how much I loathe “+1” and its cousin, Extremely Long Quoted Post Followed By “This.” I know we’re all busy people, but we don’t have a reputation system or titles here and it’s not like you save a lot of time by hitting “+1” instead of “I agree.”

One of the reasons I stay on this board and shun all the rest is the intolerable usage of netspeak. A little LOLCATZ here and there or drop an inside joke are ok in moderation* but the fact that this board is in regular intelligable english (with some exception for real world dialect) is the main reason I’m here. From some of the past pile-ons I’ve seen I’'m not alone either.
*And by moderation I mean once, in 1960, for about 20 minutes, while eating chocolate bars.

I’ve only ever seen it used as a synonymous phrase for “I agree with this” or “That was awesome!”
tl;dr

pwned!

I thought this was gonna be about the occasional strips where he goes all emo.

No, you’re right. But the lingo - it’s evolving, becoming something you never could imagine.

and the ever-present threat of raptors.

Raptors are never emo. They can, however, sense the emo in others and use it to find easy prey.
Why did you link directly to the image? You miss the alt-text that way. Let your mouse linger over the image and read the text that appears.
OK now we get “the fifth panel also applies to postmodernists.” The fifth panel says “communicating badly and then acting smug when you’re misunderstood is not cleverness.”

Anyone care to explain how this applies to postmodernists? Or should I take this to a new thread?

I took it as a jab against pseudo-intellectuals.

What is the deal with those? I never got that.

I (want to) have the same reaction with people who go “Oh, it doesn’t ring up? It must be free!”.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
If you didn’t get it, you never will.

But, ha ha ha ha ha!!

The beginning strips are doodles from his notebooks. The spiders were just some random drawinsg who have become part of the XKCDian world. (I miss the Boy in the Barrel, myself.)

brujaja: I guess your mouse has access to KY jelly and a good deal of toys. All mine has is a single sharp point.

jackdavinci: Look up ‘deconstruction’ on Wikipedia. Tell me they don’t have the best con game going on campus.
