Xoconostles? What did I just buy?

So I went over to the local Pete’s Market to pick up some lard and masa for tamales. I stumbled across a fruit/vegetable labeled “Xoconoistles” [sic]. Since I love trying unfamiliar food, I bought four of 'em. But there’s a problem. How do I eat these? Googling about seemed to indicate there’s not “i” in the name, but I’ve been unable to figure out what the heck to do with these cactus fruits.

Anybody know what the heck I do with these?

Well, I just tried eating it raw. It’s definitely to be used like a fruit. Very sour, perhaps even rhubarb like. I bet you can make a good pie or jam out of this. A strawberry-xoconostles cobbler perhaps?
