Okay, this is bothering me. Whenever I download my friend’s MP3s (he does random mixed electronica stuff with Reason), the file extentions get changed from .mp3 to .mpga when I save them.
IE gets rid of the .mp3 bit entirely, (giving me file.mpga) but Mozilla preserves that, whilst still adding the .mpga bit (giving me file.mp3.mpga).
I can’t imagine Mozilla doing this of its own accord, so it must be XP that’s behind it all.
Why is it doing this? What’s .mpga? Realplayer seems to want to play the files if I do save them as mpga, but crashes (as bloody always), yet if you manually rename them .mp3 Zinf plays them fine.
Confused. Any ideas as to how to stop it doing this?
Silly question: Are you sure IE is truncating the extension? Having “Hide extentions for known file types” checked in Explorer will mean you can’t see them.
As for Mozilla… how are you downloading them? (http/ftp/?) Do you know what web server he’s running? What version of Mozilla do you use?
There was a rather icky bug meant to fix filename extentions, but that quite often screwed things up, as the mime type given by the server can be totally whacked. It appears to be fixed now though; try upgrading to 1.3 or later.
I can see the file on the webspace is always filname.mp3, and then when I download it with IE, it becomes filename.mpga. In the ‘Save File…’ dialogue box, I can alter it there anyway, but it’s always .mpga and not .mp3 as it should be.
I am already using Mozilla version 1.3 final. I’m downloading them off a webpage. I think it’s an Apache server.
