Hi,
currently both my computers are down, so i’ve been using my wife’s laptop alot. The desktop computers I have both run ME and while there is some groaning going on at the mere mention of ME, one thing I’ve always loved about it is the ease of shut-down. CTRL+ALT+DEL and then ALT+S and you’re all done, just walk away and let the computer do the rest.
With XP it’s always a 2 menu-step before you can exit, even CTRL/ALT/DEL makes you go up to “shut down” and then actually select it to shut-down… I know it’s a minor grievance on my part, but really I’m just writing to see if anyone has found a work-around for this, a piece of code, a macro program etc., etc. if so, I’d apreciate knowing how it was done.
With the laptop it’s no big deal since it shuts itself off after you close the lid, but for the desktops I own that will eventually be upgraded, it’d be a nice thing, to know my options. Any help would be much appreciated.
Damn guys,
You rock!, after only two replies problem solved and quite brilliantly too. Thanks for saving my fingers countless mouse-scrolling hours and a few added calories I might of burned were it not for you PMH. Surely I am destined to become a fat geek now :d
I have my computer set so that all I need do is press the power button on the CPU and the Stand By/Turn Off/Restart window appears. Click on your choice.
In Control Panel select ‘Power Options’, click on ‘Advanced’ tab. Under ‘When I press the power botton on my computer…’ select ‘Ask me what to do’.
My power button is located waaaay too close to the CD drawer button for comfort, and I was tired of suddenly shutting myself down. Also great of your kids just like randomly pushing buttons…
That article is very useful - but for reference, when you’re on other XP computers, another quick way to shut down is by typing ‘Windows Key’ - U - U (in rapid succession should you wish).
