Heh…sorry, folks. Rhode Island is indeed an island. What you’re looking at on the mainland is Providence Plantations, as in the full name of the original colony, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
Common knowledge is usually neither common, nor accurate knowledge…
Verrazanno made mention in 1524 of an island “about the size of Rhodes” which he named Luisa, for the French Queen. This was Block Island. Later, Roger Williams thought that Verrazano had been referring to Aquidneck Island, so he named Aquidneck Island Rhode Island. So Block Island is the original “Rhode Island”. Providence Plantations was the first permanent settlement on the mainland, about 1636.
Won-Ton is neither victorious nor heavy.
Monitor is neither a jamaican male, myself, nor a rocky peak
Kool-Aid is neither a cigarette nor very helpful (unless it’s really hot outside)
Republican Party is neither very republican nor festive
Jack Chick is neither useful when changing a tire nor very feminine (unless you count his repressed inner self)
Well, there IS an island in the Bay called Rhode Island. However, this island is more of a “rock” or “couple of acres of land” than an actual island. The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is, however, certainly not an island. I assumed that this is what was being discussed.
Flymaster you would do well to check your atlas before you post.
Ok, everybody, open up yout atlas on page http://www.expedia.com … now, on the State officially known as “Providence Plantation and Rhode Island” (BTW, the smallest state in the US and the longest name) there is a city by the name of Newport. It is located on an island about 15 miles in length which is connected to the mainland by two bridges on Rt 138. Other, smaller towns on this island are Middletown, Portsmouth and Island park. Can somebody tell me the name of this island? Could it be by any chance Rhode Island?
