Yahoo! Curling Center Groundbreaking in Colorado!

I’ve been a volunteer for the Denver Curling Club (a 501(c)(3)) for the last five years or so. I’m so pleased to tell you, and everybody else I bump into, that on October 29th, I’ll be attending a groundbreaking for a curling facility with four sheets of dedicated curling ice! The timing is great because next February, when the Winter Olympics are on in Sochi, DCC will be ready to schedule Learn to Curl events for near future, even if the club is not open yet. With the interest that comes with Olympic curling shown on TV, we will have a good chance to fill up the club with rookie curlers. There’s a lot of work ahead, but future looks bright for curling in Colorado! It’ll be located near 6th and Indiana, which is in Golden for any of you locals, close to Colorado Mills shopping center.

Here’s a link to a recent article in the Denver Post about it.

Excellent news. The sport does seem to be gaining in popularity these days; Portland (Oregon) just opened a new club in January.

I’ve never played on arena ice, but I’m told it’s no comparison to a proper sheet. So enjoy your new ice once you have it, and happy broomstacking.

If I’m ever in Denver during the season, maybe I’ll drop by.

Hurry!!!

Thanks, Robot Arm. It is possible to make darned good ice in an arena, it just takes more time to do it than is reasonable since we have to rent that ice by the hour for prep time as well as play time. As much as I’m looking forward to good ice, I’m even more excited just to have a location of our own. A place where we can build a curling community. Ice availability for kids and youth at reasonable hours. A wheelchair league! Pot lucks and get-togethers with members just for fun. Bonspiels! It’s gonna be great! Please do drop by if you get to Denver, that would be great.

Gorsnak, we will Hurry Harrrrd!
