You don’t have to, though. You could, instead, listen. You could recognize that your own biases may make it hard for you to understand what others say, and that it’s more valuable for you to pay attention without bickering than it is to shout your truth from the hilltops yet again.
If you decide to fight, that’s not something you have to do. That’s a decision you make and a decision you’re responsible for.
As I was tangentially pointing out, Dribble is not an African American and he has a little less to lose by throwing bombs in American race relations discussions. I’m sure his experiences contain some useful insight for Americans but that’s doesn’t seem to be what he mostly shares in these dicussions.
Nigger’s derogatory and kind of racist towards whites now? Man, white privilege really does cover everything.
Or did you mean a different sort of “literally”, you boring bufoon?
Now, I want to get this clear, so there’s no doubt, so I’m going to ask again:
You think the issue with “nigger” is **just **that the word itself has a history of being used derogatorily?
You don’t think who said it historically, to whom they said it, and the relationship between those two groups both then and now, is of *any *relevance?
Is “factual” another word, like “literally”, that means something different in Bloviating Idiot Land?
This is not news.
No, you really don’t. You don’t even really know anything about my minority group.
That’s mighty white of you, to take up such a burden, man.
Like I said - show-liberal.
You have no idea how the word was used originally, and continues to be used today, do you? All you seem to know is what reactionaries have told you it means. Tell me again how you’re on the front lines…
Wait, I know this one…
Do me a favour, chump - don’t take morality lessons from satirical puppets.
 Oh, yeah, no experience with any real fight against racism here, I just have these empty words to make myself feel like I’m doing something.
Fool, you have no idea…
What idiocy are you spouting now, you drooling simpleton?
Oh, really? Is “just” also a word you don’t know the meaning of?
Did I quote you?
I said “fair and balanced”, and that’s certainly what your strategy thinks it aims to be. Tell me, how’s that “We go high” bullshit working out for y’all, lately?
I give a shit what neo-Nazis do or don’t take umbrage at.
And it’s not a slur on “white people”. It’s a slur on wypipo.
Oh, was your “I was totally going to report him for fairness sake, but you got there first” bullshit in ATMB you going out of your way to be nice to me?
I’m not asking for your imbecilic notion of understanding, you microcephalic cretin. Just fuck off with your tediousness already.
Because you’re a garbage person.
If “wypipo” pisses them off, they were never an ally to begin with.
“the cause”? Listen to this wannabe Weatherman in here. You really are just a blustering chucklefuck, aren’t you? You don’t like the idea of a purity test because you know you would fail miserably. But then, you’d fail a Voigt-Kampff too, so no surprises there.
Yeah, not so much, no.
Wait, by “not make things worse”, did you mean “play nice with racists”? Because fuck that noise.
You know, I’ve always held that “virtue signalling” was always a good thing. Turns out I was wrong.
“have to” - “help” - yeah, don’t do me any favours.
Oh, you’re soooo right - anger’s never helped me in social justice causes before…
…oh, wait, I have a set of shiny voter registration stamps dating back to '94 that says completely different.
Now shut the fuck up and think, before you have the stupid, privileged fucking arrogance to presume to fucking lecture *me *on what does and doesn’t work in combating racism. When you’ve been whipped, teargassed and shot at for the colour of your skin, you can try that tack. Until then - just shut the fuck up, BigT
Didn’t mean anything to me - just means the racist was really rankled.
I am, actually, just not any one that **BigT **would have any experience of.
It’s also used just humourously (not by me, though) - I wouldn’t characterize that as derogatory. I mean, it’s not complementary, so you have a point. Go you!
Oh right, you’re a khoikhoi or something. But my point stands. If American race relations get better or worse, it means nothing to your life.
Also, I’m right fairly frequently. The “Go you” is totally unnecessary. And even when wrong, I’m cloaked in mediocre white man confidence, which keeps me warm.
If he is then he can identify with our Native Americans. Firstly, his people list their land to Bantu speaking people who lost it to the Euros. The tableland surrounding Cape Town was arguably one of the worlds paradise before humans arrived.
*Some *of us have friends we see in meatspace, you know.
But only ever here in Cape Town. Because - travel to America? shudder
The company I work for also has a few North American branches, but I don’t think anything short of outright race war is going to really affect our bottom line, there.
Actually, what happens in the United States will and actually already is affecting the world. We live in a small, highly interconnected world now, and the United States is a big part of the world. The choices the current administration is making in terms of trade, military alliances, diplomacy, race, immigration, etc., will affect everyone.
Come on, man. Race relations in the U.S. isn’t going to have a single fucking iota of effect in South Africa. The last thing I remember from SA in that regard is a feint at nationalizing/redstributing white owned farm land and locals pissed off about refugees from other African nations. How does that relate to the American experience in any way? I obviously don’t have an ear to the ground there so I fully welcome correction on meaningful parallels but I’m rather confident it won’t have much to do with American immigration policies.
I don’t know about you, but some of us care about our friends and what happens to them even when they’re not immediately in front of us. And they’re not “a couple of people I know” - they’re old work colleagues, varsity mates and, oh yes, one best man. OK, he’s South African originally, but he lives in America now.
Why can’t *you *just admit your “Facebook life” remark was flippant nonsense and move on?
Nah. My point was you have little skin in the game vis a vis American race relations and certainly not a personal stake. “Some of your oldest friends (sorry, “work colleqgues”) are Americans” feels like weak sauce to me.
