I was going to start a thread about this but I’ll go ahead and post here. What is the deal with firing all those weapons in celebration? They don’t just fire their rifles into the sky they like to shoot RPGs, heavy machine guns, and other weapons seemingly for the sake of firing them. They’re like a bunch of kids with new toys.

Seems to be everybody’s favorite way to celebrate when they dislodge the tyrant: Fire round after round of automatic weapons into the air. Usually in an urban area.

Basic physics lesson, dudes: When you fire a rifle into the air, the bullet goes up and up in a parabolic arc and gradually slows, as its weight overcomes its initial kinetic energy. It then starts to fall and picks up all that energy again. When it gets back near the ground it is now traveling at the same speed and with the same punch as when it exited the muzzle. You just shot your neighbor’s wife through the top of the skull.

The thing is, people don’t always shoot straight up. I saw it on Mythbusters. Their tests, which shot straight up, failed to get to penetration velocity. However, reports indicated that people were actually injured and killed from bullets shot up in the air. The myth expert (a sadly missing feature nowadays) informed them that the injuries did not involve someone shooting straight up, as the bullet never fell to where it was shot.

It’s very rare in the U.S., and we make a lot of attempts to stop it, educate people against it, and prosecute when we catch people doing it, especially if it results in injury or death.

At least King Abdullah II of Jordan seems to be the only ME ruler inclined to do something about it that I could find. Good for him; I hope other ME leaders follow his example.

I find 300 fps as terminal velocity for a falling bullet a bit of a stretch, I think you will find it would be less than 1/2 that. I dont have time to prove it but surely anyone with a bit of a clue about physics can estimate this.

I really don’t remember for certain. But I don’t believe they called it busted. Like I said, they did more research back then. You got the idea that they didn’t actually rely on their experiments, at least, for busting. That urban myth specialist was always consulted at the end, and she would confirm and elaborate on their findings.

It was a very early show. I’ll see if I can find it. Unless it’s on YouTube or an official site, I’ll probably have to email it to you to avoid the ire of the mods.

In the case of a bullet fired at sufficiently close to a vertical angle to result in a non-ballistic trajectory, the bullet would tumble, lose its spin, and fall at a much slower speed due to terminal velocity and is therefore rendered less than lethal on impact (the Busted rating). However, if a bullet is fired at a lower angle allowing for a ballistic trajectory (a far more likely case), it will maintain its spin and will retain enough energy to be lethal on impact (the Plausible rating). Because of this potentiality, firing a gun into the air is illegal in most U.S. states, and even in the states where it is legal, it is not recommended by the police. Also the MythBusters were able to identify two people who had been injured by falling bullets (fired from approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) away, and hence at a lower angle), one of them fatally (the Confirmed rating). To date, this is the only myth to receive all three ratings at the same time.

Sorry for the misunderstanding - I was speaking in general terms - that yeah, the guys shooting in the air are ignoramuses, but we have no shortage of ignoramuses here (not specifically in the air shooters), so meh.
