Ye gods!

I’m only 23 and while I am neither shocked nor outraged, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to wear that. It’s hideous. Backwards or not.

Well, that’s why I submitted it—because I wanted to sound people out as to whether a teen girl in 2005 would really want to wear this thing. Should have put it in IMHO, actually. Anyway, I don’t know about “these kids today” vs. other eras. I imagine that in the heyday of disco, many teen girls wore something similiar to prom, and they might have actually gotten in.

Thank you for the links, IrreverentTone. The second photo is a bit less jarring. But according to the first article, even worn that way, the gown still wouldn’t pass muster at most HS proms, because many of them have a dress code that demands a full bodice.

FTR, I wore a gownless evening strap to my senior prom in 1988. My mom was okay with it because I did jumping jacks in the store to prove that it wouldn’t fall down, and I had an iron-clad waist cincher underneath. She saw no reason to hide my D-cups under a bushel, but she never would have approved of, and I wouldn’t have asked about, anything that carried a risk of a wardrobe malfunction.

I mean, the way it’s presented in the second photo, not the first. As far as the first photo, a teenager would probably find out what a lot of girls find out at that age: that there’s a world of difference between what a team of professionals can do in a photo session, and what a non-professional can pull off when she actually has to, you know, move around and stuff.

Intentional joke? Hilarious malapropism? Nudist prom?

I think I’d be more concerned over the prom sponsors who would let a teenaged girl enter the prom wearing such a revealing number.

That’s definitely NOT a prom dress. In fact, I wouldn’t wear it. I don’t find it classy enough.

This dress has been discussed on my favorite blog, Go Fug Yourself. (dedicated to mocking celebrity fashion disasters) Anyway, I don’t think the dress is on backwards, the model is just not well-endowed enough to wear the dress properly. (someone’s pointed out the suspicious blur near the right strap that looks like an airbrushed nipple) Here’s “better” picture and here’s one from the side.

The site has a whole bunch o’ugly, ugly dresses; like this one or this. Where’s the pukey smiley?

Intentional joke.

I did that just last night during the Quest for Bridesmaids’ Dresses. People looked at me like I was crazy, but hey–I’m going to be drunk and dancing while wearing heels. The last thing we need is an unexpected wardrobe malfunction. I had enough of those during my Rocky Horror days.

I really hope the woman who said "“If my daughter had the body to wear it, I’d let her!” doesn’t have a daughter.
“If my daughter had the body to wear it, I’d let her…but she’s a hideous gnome, so I refuse to let her near fashion.” Good job, mom; like your daughter didn’t have enough potential for self image problems.

The model in the original link is definitely wearing the dress backwards; the neckline is U shaped, rather than V shaped like it is in the normal front. Also, the dress would give even more coverage if it were crossed just below the neck as was originally intended.

The photo in the original link makes the dress look absolutely awful. It’s not a matter of it being obscene but of being a fashion disaster. You’d look more elegant buck naked.
The photos of the dress being worn properly (with twice-crossed straps) are midly provocative, but not all that appalling to my eye. And they look like something that one wouldn’t fall out of all that easily.

My GF in high school was pretty darn flat. She wore a prom dress that was backless, thus couldn’t really wear a bra, but no support was really needed. The front was mildly low-cut. If she’d had breasts, they might have filled out the dress, but as it was even leaning slightly forward her dress would gap away from her body and all would be revealed. Never presented a problem with school officials or her peers, though. shrug
