Enough with this techno-babble!
It was hyperbole.
Yeah. It shut down my computer. Like I said.
I don’t think Google would hire that.
I don’t want to start a new thread just for this, and I would just reply in the ATMB thread but it’s closed (though of course queen bitch got the last word, as usual), so here we are again:
A new user starts a thread in ATMB saying “Hey, waitaminute! There’s something the matter with your registrations. Unchecking “receive email from administrators” doesn’t even let the system send the confirmation email! I had to register again.”
Tuba swoops in, and (magnanimous interpretation ahead) lightheartedly says “It’s not a bug if you do it to yourself!” and tells the user to email her to get the two-accounts thing worked out.
It seems to me she’s missed the big picture (rare, I know), and so I post saying that the registration form shouldn’t allow the user to select a seemingly-innocuous option that will make the registration fail. It just doesn’t make sense to me to potentially turn away users because of a checkbox.
Samclem closes the thread, with the pronouncement that the “perceived problem” really only affects the OP and Tuba. Except for all the other potential members who might want to register and not receive email from administrators, he’s completely right.
Eight hours later, Tuba posts in the closed thread:
If that’s the case, maybe the system should be changed. I would argue that it’s not the case: The system was asked to register a new member. It failed.
This member gave it a second shot and attempted to notify someone of the problem (and in the correct forum, even). How many others haven’t or won’t?
I am a proponent of this entrance exam.
I’m not going to register a second account just to find out, but I’m pretty sure you can’t even do this until your registration has been activated in the first place.
You are such a whiny little cunt G226. You bitch about every comma in every post made by TD, then you bitch when she gets snarky in her replies to you. We get it, you don’t like TD. You keep poking the bear, hoping to be mauled, so you can complain about being mauled. Stop being an ass.
shrug
Like I said, I wouldn’t have even posted here again except that the ATMB thread was closed. I see it as a legitimate problem, and I couldn’t care less whether it’s her or Jerry or whoever that looks into it. I see no reason to turn users away for no good reason, especially now that ad revenue rather than subscriptions will be driving the site.
I simply don’t think it’s obvious that unchecking that box won’t even let you complete the registration. I don’t think that most users, if they uncheck that box, will bother to wait around, realize the email’s not coming, come back, figure out what they did wrong and register again. Why chase people away?
And it’s the poster’s fault that your computer can’t handle a few seconds of the enter key being held down, and that you didn’t see perhaps the world’s most obvious rickroll coming from a mile away?
He’s right. If some long-term members in good standing can’t figure out how to get out of a rickroll, how many decent and interesting would-be Dopers are turned away because of an overdose of idiocy on Jerry’s part in the registration form? As if we didn’t suffer enough thanks to that guy.
BTW, I answered you in a PM tonight. I work all day, so I don’t always reply as promptly as I would prefer.
As I said, I assume that the option to NOT receive emails from the administration is in the original vBulletin software. The SDMB has been loathe to alter the original software. So, if I’m correct in my analysis, there really isn’t anything that can be done to alter that registration form. If the registrant is paranoid/silly enough to “uncheck” the box, then they perhaps won’t be able to register. The Guest in question was savvy enough to try it again, realizing that he/she may have made a mistake unchecking the box. And, indeed, registered the second time.
Seeing that the Guest had a grasp on the situation, I closed the thread before it became another rant about the Administration of the Board. I emailed Jenny to make sure she realized what was going on, copied her the links to both of the Guest registrations.
Hey, can you see your house from up there?
I’m so sick of this response. He’s not talking about “this website”, he’s talking about being rickrolled. And he’s not talking about “getting in trouble”, he’s talking about maintaining professionalism in his workplace, which Rick Astley videos are not conducive to. This may come as a surprise to you, but there are people who are allowed to surf in moderation on company time, but who also think it’s wise to be discreet about it. I know, assuming he’s got a job where any personal internet use is a violation of the rules really makes you feel smug and self-righteous, but it’s unlikely to actually be true.
Personally, I think rickrolling is hilarious. It cracks me up. But I’d like to have contexts in which I can count on it not happening. In the Pit, it seems fine and I’m on guard when I click a link. Using a rickroll as a cite in GQ, however, should be off limits. I’d probably feel the same about some of the other forums if I actually read any of them. Great Debates, for example, seems like it would be a candidate for a prank-link-free forum, since it’s allegedly geared toward serious discussions. Whatever. So long as GQ is rickroll-free (except in the rare case where “Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley” is the answer to a factual question :)), I don’t give two squirts about the rest.
She Sherlock, if you can’t keep the sexes straight it shows you don’t know…what’s the phrase…hang on…oh, yeah…got it now…anything.
You are genuinely stupid, aren’t you?
I’m so sick and tired of the “tuba’s a bitch” threads. Get over it people. How important is this board “exactly” to your lives? C’mon. Tuba (Jenny) works very hard keeping this silly place together, either by responding to people’s problems or issues or just by being a supportive friend. GET OVER IT!
This is just a message board…it’s not your life, nor your reality. It’s your virtual reality and you’re lucky to have someone like Tuba who cares enough about this virtual reality to moderate it. Do you not think that several thousand people’s problems aren’t a pain in the ass???
Let it go…
::: applause:::
I suspect you have either not read my original complaint, or have read it and not understood it. In either case, I am not persuaded that it is my job to enlighten you, should such a thing be possible.
Oh, so agreed. Once again, a pill popping scatterbrain has shown us the way. Why, oh why don’t people stop arguing on the internet?!?!
It would have been funnier if you’d posted ::: rolls :::
Gee, thanks, dude. It’s been a full year now past… I so appreciate the reminder. And since you cared to remember, my life with my husband and two boys has never been happier. We’ve come a long way, baby.
Again, thanks for the crass remark. If you thought it wouldn’t be “got” you were wrong. Shame on you.
