True, but a moderator’s job is to judge behavior.
Referring to the poster Q.E.D. as GED is highly popular at the “board that shall not be mentioned.”
Perhaps you decided to use this sobriquet all on your own. If you’ve never visited that loser-site, then you’ve probably picked it up from someone using it in another Pit thread about QED.
Just the same, twisting someone’s user name on the Board has been frowned upon in general. It used to be popular to bait Liberal that way. Just bad form, really.
You know, for at least this child of the 80s, it isn’t even necessary to click a link to be rickrolled. All I have to do is read the title of the song or see the name of the artist and I get the damn thing stuck in my head.
In short: I hate you all.
Really? frowned upon? Since when? ( the Lib thing, by my recollection was when folks referred to him by a specific combo of his old screen name plus new one which was different). fucking w/screen names has been common (if juvenile) thing in the pit.
But, what I want to know, is why the fuck did lolcheck get banned?!
Oh Jeezus I’m so sorry.
American football coach at my university. Look up “Mike Gundy” on wikipedia for an idea of what the rant is about.
He’s ranting about someone making something out of very little. Lynn turning alert messages into a bazillion popups that try and nuke your system made me  .
And the fact that it too was a mildly popular video for a while made me link it.
According to Garfield226, if I understand correctly, because the official rules state “don’t be a jerk”, mods are allowed to say “you’re being a jerk”.
Supposedly, if the official rules had said, “don’t be an ass”, then calling someone an ass would be acceptable, in all forums, by mods.
Don’t see much difference between being a jerk and being an ass, myself. I’d also vote that mods are allowed to call a spade a spade, or an ass an ass, in whatever forum they want.
Pretty much. If the mods are telling me I’m violating a rule, it would be pretty dumb for them to not be able to tell me what rule I’m violating. “You’re being a jerk, it’s against the rules, knock it off,” for example. I don’t even like the idea of a mod (or anyone else) saying, “You know what, you’re a jerk.” Saying “You’re an ass” is right out, because that was plainly an insult.
And I’m happy if your voting made you feel good, but the rules are already in place, and Tuba clearly violated them.
It’s an outflow valve, not an intake valve, FYI. Just in case…
Mel Brook’s Torquimada did…
That’s beacuse you are both a jerk and an ass. The milage of others may vary.
Hmm, it has been a while since I have seen such a masterful use of the 3rd Grader “Are too! Am not!” school of debate. Kudos, sir.
Yeah, but it it was Opalrolling, Death Ray Rolling, Dog Burning, Pie Bringing, or just some crappy Monty Python sketch or SCA joust, we’d think it was the funniest thing ever, and posting it in every other message without so much as a raised eyebrow from the mods.
Basically, memes from the outside world = immature, jerkish, obnoxious, and so on. Cliches from the SDMB = intelligent, witty, and never out of fashion.
Always good to quote somebody out of context to make you look like, well I can say genius. You must be another third grader.
You’re certainly right that it’s common and juvenile.
lissner got warned for something along the lines of what I was describing. My vague recollection is that another poster got warned for playing around with someone’s name. Sorry. Getting old.
brownie55, do you even have a dog in this debate? or did you just come into the thread to insult people for no discernible reason? Just wondering.
Seriously? Playing with peoples’ names is “Getting old”? Uh, yeah. As old as civilization, dickwad.
So I wasn’t crazy for thinking that there was a rule about this.
No, you would be crazy. samclem is wrong that this is “along the lines” of what we’re arguing about. That warning was very clearly for lissener refusing to accept Liberal’s name change while in the Pit. If you actually fucking read closely you’ll see that lissener did not mangle or use some juvenile play on his name to insult, he used Liberal’s old name. Libertarian. If he had been using a “other place” name, it would have been “Liberalalatarian”.
That warning was also complete bullshit, but as I said, it’s a different argument.
I wish Lynn had seen it first.
