It’s up to him.
Well you never banned “O RLY?”, lolcat speak*, or “bring pie”. Do you want every MPSIMS thread filling up with those? Or perhaps you guys are a little more rational about other internet memes.
- I remember there was a minor kerfuffle but I don’t think it was banned, just mostly hated by everyone.
Good point. I knew what I meant. Redone for the world’s benefit.
You either made it up whole cloth without seeing the site or went and are lying about what it does.
Long story. I’ll email you, but probably not for a couple days. I start my new job tomorrow.
[/personal digression - please redon your helmets and flak jackets]
Can I get banned for this ?
No, it wasn’t. It was one of those sites that has a bazillion popups. Had I seen it first, I would have immediately suspended the poster for at least a week, and consulted other mods as to whether it was a banning offense. That sort of link isn’t any sort of joke. It’s purely malicious.
If it wasn’t the one already posted, which one was it?
And, as I’ve repeated, I agree that those kinds of links should be against the rules. I have absolutely no beef with that decision whatsoever, I just didn’t understand the tons of popups (which I usually associate with new windows, not dialogue boxes) and malware comments.
internetisseriousbusiness.com/ ?
I’m damn sure that’s what it linked to when I moused over.
What is kind of amusing is that although it doesn’t parse as a link on the boards, gmail automatically turns it into one. Better watch out!
I just ran it. There are no pop-up windows, and certainly no malware. There are alert windows (there’s a difference) that show the lyrics to the song. Oh, and the video window moves around so you can’t close it. A particularly annoying variation on the theme, but still just a rick roll. I can’t imagine getting worked up over such a thing. Call it an abundance of perspective.
Anything that can’t be closed easily, and can cause computers to crash, is malicious in my book. I did not click on the link in question, I am going by what other people reported to me. A rickroll might be a joke. The sort of thing I’m talking about, something that is intended to annoy, is not a joke.
Agreed. I’m pretty stupid about computers, so maybe there was a better way, but I had to shut mine down to get it to stop. I didn’t find it funny at all.
Not everyone is tech savvy. Such links should be verboten.
Yes they should. As should insulting other posters outside the pit.
Hmmm.
Go to 2:49 in this video. (Not a rickroll).
I don’t get it. Who is that guy, and what is he on about? And most importantly, what does it have to do with anything?
I suppose that’s the crux of it. She said that he was an ass for doing what he did, i.e., breaking a rule. What if she had called him a jerk? Would that have been an insult? I have seen many warnings that accuse the poster of violating the “don’t be a jerk” rule, thereby calling them jerks.
I think the fact that he chose to post that particular link in that particular thread opened him up for harsh criticism. He was being an ass.
I think it comes down to the difference between calling someone an ass, and saying that behaving in a certain way makes someone an ass.
I don’t think the difference is distinguishable in practice. Outside the pit, I could no more say “Contrapuntal, by saying that Bush is the best President we’ve ever had, you’re being an ass,” than I could say “Contrapuntal, you’re an ass. You think Bush is the best President we’ve ever had.” I’m making the distinction between your behavior (saying Bush was the best President we’ve ever had) and just calling you an ass outright (and then giving my reasoning). But either way, I’d get my hand slapped at least, and rightly so, IMO.
You can’t even say “That is a lie” in GD anymore, and that’s even more clearcut at separating the post from the poster (again, IMO…I don’t necessarily disagree with that rule either, I haven’t really thought through it). “You are a liar” and “that is a lie” are treated in the same manner, unless I’m misunderstanding the stickied thread at the top of that forum.
For the record, I don’t know what you are referring to. No matter; your wish is my command.
Can I call you a jerk in GD? Can a mod say “You’re being a jerk, don’t do that again” in GD?
Apparently there is a shadow board that comments/snarks/whatever about the Dope. The Dope does not want off-board stuff continued here. Consequently, a term that is used over there becomes forbidden over here. How those of us who do not frequent the other board are supposed to know what is kosher and what is not is beyond me.
