Yeesh! Hurricane Dean comes!

untimelysmile you there? Everything ok? Were the umbrellas any use at all? Check in when the power comes back on.

Hey guys! Thank you all so much for your thoughts and illegal prayers. I think they helped.

Power just came back on, and we’re back home, tidying up, fixing our life back together.

The scoop:
It wasn’t as bad here as it was in other parts of the country. We spent the night under lots of rain and wind- but nothing that terrifying. It was actually rather normal, if a little spooky- the sky still looks weird.

But the north- oh my god, the north.
Our relatives (who live about 40 or so miles from Majahual, where the hurricane struck) called us, terrified, at about 2:30 this morning. The wind and rain were stupendous over there. My aunt reports that the mahogany door- a stout, sturdy thing- was breathing. My mom corroborates this evidence, as she had been through a hurricane years before. It hit them hard all through the night and is just now dying off.

Hurricanes are scary :o

So, to conclude… everyone’s safe who should be safe, we haven’t had any reports of injuries or deaths yet, and I haven’t had any opportunities to take any spectacular “CNN-weatherfriend” pics- but when we go up north I’ll take some photos of the damage.
(I do have some pictures of the preparations- I’ll upload them, and do I need an invite to sign up with Flickr?)

So that’s it, for now. Will keep you guys posted. Thanks again

Well that’s good to know.
One of our coworkers left last Friday for Mexico (nobody can remember exactly where), and apparently called Monday to say that his flight back next weekend was delayed 2 days. I’ve asked that if he calls again, find out which city he’s in!

Oh, goodness, I forgot!

Since we’re all safe and sound now…

brings pie

It has bananas

untimely, welcome to the boards. I’ve been a little nervous for the people in Hurricane Dean’s path (I have some friends in Mexico, but think they’re safe because they live in the heartland) I just want to wish you good luck and safety. I can’t imagine how devastating a storm like that can be… I live too far north to have ever witnessed a hurricane.

I would pray for you for free… but I don’t really pray. How about if I just send warm and loving thoughts your way instead?

Thanks, olivesmarch4th, your thoughts mean a lot to us over here! (And about the prayer thing- I’m actually borderline atheist in any case, prayers and thoughts hold equal currency to me :))

The damage is being assessed in northern Belize now. One of the shelters’ doors broke at the hinges and flew open during the fury of the hurricane. We’re wondering how those people held out.

The hurricane itself is pretty bad, but it’s the aftermath that’s always the most stressful part imho.
