But if true, it probably would knock the Mueller investigation out of the news for a few days, so I’m sure that Trump is praying with all his might for it to happen with no thought to the consequences of it, because if Trump is going to pray for anything at all, it is the biggest, the most beautiful eruption you’ve ever seen.

I’ve heard these predictions my whole life … someone is always predicting this at all times … when Yellowstone does erupt, some lucky bastard is going to be held up as a Prophet from God … it’s really bad here in the Pacific Northwest, when do we expect a 9.5 M earthquake? … Why, any second now …
Just considering the physical side of things - the land and atmosphere - how long would it take from a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption for things to approximate ‘normal’ again?

And that is a hell of a big IF.
Eventually, someone will be right of course. It’s not like this thing will never erupt again. I just hope it happens a few more centuries down the road, when presumably we’ll have some of our eggs in other baskets throughout the solar system, plus the super AI’s will be in charge and can probably think of something useful that could be done to make it less of a disaster than it would be otherwise.
This is definitely the break the Trump administration (what’s left of it) has been waiting for! It will finally distract the public from the almost constant chaos and idiotic policies that has so marked this administration as the shinning beacon of fuckup it is known for.
I’d buy a plot of a farmland in Australia and stockpile 5-10 years of food, water, fuel, solar panels, medicine, etc.
Then, I’d do the opposite of what you suggest. Shortly before the eruption, I’d go as long as I could on agricultural futures everywhere in the world except the U.S. My money would be in Tokyo, London, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia.
Atmosphere: Probably less than a decade and mostly confined to the Northern Hemisphere.
Land: Centuries, perhaps millenia depending on the geographic range of lahars and tephra before land in much of the American Midwest returns to arable status.
