Yes, another "If you have to ask, it's a scam" Q, but curious anyway

Got a letter the other day with “OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS ENCLOSED” and Notice Urgency: “EXTREME” printed on the front. Inside was a notification that I had won 2 round-trip tickets to anywhere in the US at a cost of up to $1,298.

“Hmm,” I said, knowing that I had trip to make in April to see my newborn niece.

The actual company name involved is not displayed: it lists a phone number (866 area code) for the “Awards Department.” Says they have attempted to contact me several times (my land phone is a depository for crooked debt collectors asking for people whom I don’t ever know), and that it isn’t a timeshare or land sales offer. They also have a mock ticket enclosed as well.

So, what’s the angle here? Do they just ring up oodles of phone charges on me if I call the number? Ask me for my credit card (even tho it is “free”), probably for some small “administrative fee” no doubt?

Yep. “Company” name is “US Airlines.” Soak you on administrative fees and it also involves a sales pitch on a hugely expensive “travel club” somewhere. You never get the tickets either.

Hope this helps anybody else who might get something similar.

I looked at one of those deals once, years ago. They actually did provide free airline tickets. But to get them, you had to book your hotel and car through them at wildly inflated prices.
