Only on the ladies. On the men… well… those hairy asses should be well-clothed.
Whoosh.
Anyway, we all know that there are a fuck ton of Mac users out there who are happy, some even to the point of obsession, with their Macs. Anecdotal evidence is pretty much useless here, as there is so much of it on either side. I’m sure if you looked hard enough, you could find anecdotal evidence to say everything from all Macs being possessed by Satan to Windows destroying the space-time continuum.
And after reading all of it, we will all simply ignore it in favor of our own experience, and our own evaluation of our own needs. For example, I’m not ever going to buy a Mac, except perhaps as a second computer to run Linux on and see what I can do with it. I just don’t like them, and they do cost more (and I’m not going to spend money on tech support either way, so TCO for a PC will be lower).
But in any event, trotting out stories of people who like their Macs, and have had good experiences with them is pretty much useless.
Hey, I don’t like Macs, and you know why? Because I’m not used to the operating system! I can’t find the buttons, everything is different but the same. But if I used Macs all the time I’d feel the same way about PCs. It has nothing to do with which system is better.
I agree that Ice Cream is nothing to skimp on. But the REALLY REALLY important thing not to skimp on? Birth Control. Trust me people, go for the top quality condoms, please. Are you going to trust those free ones that have been sitting at the bottom of a jar in some nightclub? Treat yourself to the best, please.
I Prefer PCs to Macs, but Apples do seem to last forever. I have a 33mhz Performa that is still chugging along, and seems faster than my 166mhz PCs. I know some people that still use Apple IIes.
COOL! I’m using these from now on whenever I’m in a teeny-ager thread, or some such.
I’m pretty dissapointed in this thread. I was hoping for an echo of the legendary “PC vs MAC Simply Explained” thread.
There were some good hits but the momentum just wasn’t there. Maybe it needed a more inflammatory title.
Maybe people realised that computers are just tools and not deserving of such emotion…
Nah.
b.
But they are deserving of such emotion!
What isn’t deserving of such emotion is what platform YOU decide to spend YOUR time working in. I am not going to waste my breath slamming PCs and Microsoft operating systems if that’s what you like to work on. Heck, I know people who like gin, and will willingly drink it even when they know they have the choice of rum–go figure!
For me–not necessarily for you–a Macintosh is sufficiently better, all other things being equal, that I’d prefer a 180 MHz 7300 with 64 MB RAM on an 832 x 624 screen to a dual 2 GHz P4 with 2 GB RAM displaying on paired 2048 x 1536 TFT flats hooked to twin AGP cards.
At my last two jobs, I had the choice of using the computer (or computers) they supplied me for free or bringing in my own. I brought in my own. (For most of that period it has been my trusty PowerBook and therefore didn’t cost me anything, and before that I had a spare 6100 with a G3 accelerator card, which didn’t cost me anything either).
If you say you love the PC so much you’d rather bring in your own hardware / buy the PC equiv software / support your own box / buy and run a Mac emulator on your PC for the Mac functions that don’t exist in native mode on the PC, I would respect that if I were your manager in the “creative” department. I might twirl my finger against my forehead every time your name came up in conversation, but you should be allowed to choose your own tools if you know how to use them.
Now, bear in mind that I don’t hate my PC, and in fact, plan on buying a “new” (well, used but “new” to me) PC next year.
But when I got my first Mac, a 6100 PowerPC (roughtly equivalent to a Pentium 75) I would spend all my time on it, leaving the very nice 450 MHz PC collecting dust. I just loved that little Mac, with its meagre 40 megs of RAM. It had a personality. I loved the OS. I still do.
What?!? God Forbid someone be allowed to use their own tools! No! We can’t have that! We have to pester and bother them, until they use what we think they should use!
whilst I am not a fan of the iMac (or any Mac for that matter), I respect yosemitebabe for refusing to succumb to the sheep mentality and deciding to travel to the same destination as the rest of us through slightly unconventional means.
Then again, this is coming from a guy who has an unhealthy obsession with Saabs …
