I don’t know his name without googling or imdb’ing it, but he played Stymie (the little bald black kid with the bowler hat) on The Little Rascals. I think he used Stymie as a professional name as well- he looked basically the same in old age; he was also on Good Times as Monty, a buddy of James’s on several episodes.
Bonus trivia question: Which of his fellow Little Rascals played Dr. Mark Craig’s mentor, Dr. David Domidian, on a flashback episode of St. Elsewhere? (The same character was played by Dean Jagger in an episode set in the [then] present, by which time he was hopelessly senile and feeble- why do I know this stuff?).
They also wrote for Reverend Billy Joe Bickerstaff (played by Richard Paul, probably bka the mayor on Carter Country or for playing Jerry Falwell in at least two movies). This was revealed in an in-character cameo appearance on an episode of the sitcom below, on which Rev. B.J. Bickerstaff was a rightwing televangelist and secretly a Soviet agent…
Trivia Question-
What short lived 1980s sitcom (from the producers of Soap and Golden Girls) featured Patty Duke as the first female president of the U.S.A.?
Hail to the Chief (with the inimitable Ted Bessell as her husband)
Try these unanswered ones from my TV trivia thread last month, Sampiro :
The Odd Couple:
Three football players had guest shots on the show. Deacon Jones played himself; which two did not play themselves? (Hint: 1 was a starring guest spot, 1 was a small role)
Mary Tyler Moore:
What was the name of the game show Ted auditioned to host?
All in the Family:
What was the name of the neighborhood mortician?
Name 2 actors from “military” sitcoms who had recurring roles on the show.
Hill Street Blues:
Who had a “Fatal Attraction” crush on Stan Jablonski?
What did Mick Belker’s father do for a living?
I’m sure one is Allan Melvin (bk4 Sam the Butcher or Mogilla Gorilla, but also on Gomer Pyle), who played Barney Hefner (and whose wife was played by an Oscar winner- though it wasn’t her first character she played on the show). I’m trying to think of other recurring actors (Vincent Gardenia [also played a couple of characters], James Cromwell, Sorrel Booke, Sherman Hemsley, [the guy who played Harry but whose real name I can’t think of], but can’t think of any military sitcoms they were on. (Trying to think of military sitcom actors- Frank Sutton, Ronnie Schell, Larry Storch/Forrest Tucker/Ken Berry, Borgnine-Conway, Phil Silvers… drawing blanks.)
Here’s a harder one:
Ted Knight and Dan Rowan (Laugh-In) were real-life veterans who served admirably in World War II.
Name some other sitcom actors who have real military records!
Give that man a see-gar!
Y’know, kunilou , between you and Sampiro we probably could have kept the last TV trivia thread going a while longer!
Depends on what you mean by “military records”. During the time that US military service was compulsory, I imagine most male actors spent some time in the service. Bob Newhart comes to mind, as I heard him mention it in a recent interview.
Then there’s that whole Beaver and Vietnam thing…
I just have to share this … in reading this thread, a 30-year-old timebomb went off in my head: I grew up with a girl whose name was Lou Ann. Someone bestowed upon her the nickname of Poovey and it stuck, from elementary school through high school. At the 10-year high school reunion, she let everyone know she NO LONGER went by the nickname of Poovey.
