I think this movie was made in the 60s. It’s about a viking (or some other warrior tribe guy who dresses in leather skins and such) who returns to his homeland. His grandfather is the chieftain, and there’s a scene where the warrior is being welcomed in the main hall.
There’s been some kind of family argument that’s been going on for decades however, and the grandfather refuses to actually speak to the warrior guy. Instead, he orders one of his subordinates to speak for him while injecting some passive-aggressive snarks. Ex: “Tell my grandson he is most welcome to these halls as long as he obeys our laws, unlike his ungrateful father.” The subordinate repeats the lines, but the warrior guy eventually becomes too impatient and the two eventually get into a shouting match. That’s all I remember from the movie, and now I’m dying to know what it was.
I checked the Internet Movie Database at www.imdb.com and used their Advanced Search feature to look for feature films made between 1950 and 1970 with a keyword of “Viking”, which gave 16 results. I didn’t find a synopsis that matched well with your description so tried using keyword “warrior” and restricting the genre to Action, Sci-Fi, War and Adventure for English language films, then looking for a plot that included words like “grandfather chieftain viking warrior” and still did not get any matches.
I then tried the All Movie database at www.allmovie.comand used the Advanced Search function to generate a list of films with release year between 1950 and 1980,in the genres of War, Historical Film, Epic, Drama, Adventure, and Action. I did not look through all of the results but this might be one way to eventually find the film.
If you haven’t already, you might try both of these databases and specifying the movie type (i.e., feature film v. short film), language the film is in, whether it was a color or black & white film, where you think the film was made, etc.
Finally, UCLA has a film school, which means their library is likely to have a subject librarian who knows about finding films. The UCLA library also has a Chat link to ask a librarian a question at http://www.library.ucla.edu/support/research-help. You might try posting your question there and seeing if they are able to give you a match or otherwise refer you to more resources.
Thanks Debs! Sorry all that effort amounted to nothing.
I’ll start the WAG game:
Yor - Hunter From the Future (1983) I don’t recall any such scene, but then, I don’t recall ANY scene from this movie. It just fits the basics of wardrobe…
Maybe 20 yrs off.
Tony Curtis did The Vikings in 1958 and Spartacus in 1960…
I seem to remember The Vikings being loaded with shouting scenes. Maybe not.
…
Your mention of Tony Curtis made me think of “Taras Bulba” (sp ?). With Yul Brynner. I think they were huns or something. I don’t recall that particular scene, but it’s possible.
