Saturday I was driving to my ex’s to pick up my daughter…and I noticed something very off on a stretch of highway I travel. This is Washington Street, which passes through a town (Canton) and is rather thickly settled. South of my enry into Washington St., there is a traffic sign…“30 MPH speed Limit”, this is in effect until the intersection with a state highway (Rt. 27). Howver, the SAME stretch of road (Northbound) has a 20 MPH speed limit! Is this legal? Suppose I was stopped by a policeman (nortbound) going 27 MPH-7 MPH over the speed limit…could I argue that the southbound speed limit should apply as well?
Or is the town able to impose two different speed limits on the same stretch of roadway?
