So I have a few friends that have moved off into this great wide world and I’ve decided to send along a small care package every now and then (at least until the USPS closes up shop). Included is a “Mystery Mix CD” and I’ve put a different theme on each.
After hearing four songs in a row on pop radio that featured whistling, I made a whistling mix. Then there was the masturbation themed songs. And two others were songs titled with increasing lengths of time (In the Midnight Hour to Afternoon Delight, etc kinda thing), and a Rick Roll cd where the first words of the song titles were the chorus in order.
Anyway, I feel the creativity waning now and am curious what other ideas Dopers can throw out there before I resort to well-known songs covered in other languages or 80s duets.
Also Steely Dan - Deacon Blues
How about songs with a gambling-related theme?
Wilco - Casino Queen
Morphine - Have A Lucky Day
and of course that Kenny Rogers song…
And obviously, Elton John- Your Song
Also, Aly & AJ- Potential Breakup Song
I was thinking about a money themed one before and even put together a decent mix, but it seemed a little blunt and just didn’t pan out.
An elemental mix came to mind, but other than some basic elements and uranium, there’s a dearth of songs. I just wanted to do it so I could end with Tom Lehrer.
I’ve often been tempted to make a mixtape of songs (by mainstream artists) that happen to have the word “f*ck” in them - starting with the subtle, such as The Who’s “Who Are You?”, continuing to John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero” and concluding, perhaps, with Harry Nilsson’s “You’re Breaking My Heart”.
My friend, you’re talking to the king of weird mixtape themes.
I’ve made (often with the help of the SDMB, I don’t forget!) mixes for “Flying in a Helicopter Gunship” (the first two tracks are “Fortunate Son” and “For what It’s Worth,” naturally. The gold standards in Hollywood soundtracks when you cut to a scene in a Huey flying over 'Nam); Cyberpunk; Psychological Warfare (if you’re ever laying siege to a compound, and you need scary, irritating, or demoralizing music…hey, semper paratus); Old West; Steampunk; Flight (normal flight and “combat mission” varieties); Armageddon; Robot War; “Emergency Stay Awake” (lots of loud, bombastic, frightening, and obnoxious music); Revolution (good for angry rallies!); All-purpose celebration music; Hymn or Dirge-like vocal pieces (most secular); Mad Science; Gibbering Insanity—lots of Dr. Demento-fodder, here…not to be confused with the “Stressed Out” mix…you name it.
