Right back atcha on the rolleyes, and if you’re going to make this sort of assertion, at least put up some evidence. Elsewise, just disagree with the OP and leave it at that.
To answer your first question, because then we wouldn’t have to deal with questions about how to kill 30,000 diseased chickens if we managed to stop raising animals for meat. Either that, or some people might realize what happens in modern farming and decide they don’t want to support it. I don’t think it’s a terribly good argument (and I’m a vegetarian myself) compared to other reasoning, but it’s possible.
As for the second, you might be thinking of a couple infants who were severely malnourished, and possibly died, due to neglectful mothers that wanted their babies to be vegan (no eggs or non-human dairy products, which is distinct from vegetarian) but failed to provide breast milk (which is perfectly fine even if you wanted your baby to be vegan) or a properly nutritious alternative. These have been argued in the Pit, you might want to search for cites here. The general consensus was that these were neglectful, ignorant mothers.
Hey, what the fuck’s up with this mulch?
You just gotta love how Meatros and carrot are arguing with one another in a veggie thread. Each one taking the predictable side.
Haj
Taking a side? If you like. I’d prefer to think that I’m fighting ignorance by not letting unfounded assertions go by without contest.
Personally, I think the OP’s pretty gross, but I’m not holding it up as a reason for anything.
the_great_dalmuti
Well that does it, I’m going vegan…
tomorrow :dubious:
Allow me to put my $0.02 in:
Note that these hens were raised for EGGS, not MEAT, therefore all of the egg eating vegetarians contributed to this problem. As a matter of fact, they are not even willing to eat the chickens after they no longer produce eggs. EVERY chicken would suffer this same fate if we were all egg eating vegetarians, not just the diseased ones.
Some vegetarians, ovo-lacto vegetairinas such as I, do eat eggs.
I think they took Chicken Run a little too seriously.
First, you must take the shells off.
There are lacto-vegetarians, those who drink milk but do not eat eggs. Regardless, I did point out that it wasn’t a terribly good reason to cite as a defense.
i respect that the_great_dalmuti is a vegetarian, but i feel like s/he doesn’t understand that we all pretty much KNOW that our eating of meat involves the killing of animals.
showing us that the killing is sometimes quite gross does not really work to end my desire for meat. the shockl value of this is more likely to make me think that you are just a naive fringe-dwelling whiner without a cogent argument for your side (and yes,m i know that there ARE good arguments for vegetarianism).
it’s like anti-abortion folks that show up with signs with pics of aborted fetuses- yes, it’s gross. so are the leftovers from any surgical procedure. now go away.
my only regret over this matter is that they were not able to use the aged chickens for something tasty, or to feed the poor. i just hope that they made good fertilizer.
I seem to remember hearing something similar - a two-month old baby was taken away from her parents because they were such strict vegans they wouldn’t feed their child formula, only pureed soy beans and vegetables. The baby was less than half the normal birthweight, but the mom didn’t think she was unhealthy.
<a href=“http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/03/29/ctv.swinton/index.html”>CNN article</a>
I’ve also done extensive research on both the pork and poultry industry for my company (don’t ask why), and, even after hearing about the unsanitary conditions under which those animals are processed, I still eat meat. I’m just asking for a good, old fashioned case of e-coli.
Damn - I always screw up my links for some reason. You’d think that with something as easy as that I’d remember how to do it. I’m a web developer & researcher for God’s sake!
It’s amazing who people will hire. Tee hee…
I thought witnessing was supposed to go into IMHO.
Assertion? Didn’t you notice the ‘?’
BTW-the rolleyes was intended toward the the topic, not my personal feelings towards vegans/vegetarians. Perhaps I should have been a little clearer as to post though.
overlyverbose you’re just not using the right format.

It’s interesting that everyone who hears that story latches on to the veganism as being the problem. Never mind that the article says the mother actually carried an ice pick to her daughter’s hospital room. Never mind that the baby had never seen a doctor. No, the parents were vegans. Oh, well that explains it.
Funny, I never see anyone saying, “Carnivorous/Omnivorous parents neglect children”. Shocking.

To Meatros: Didn’t you used to beat your wife?
My bad on the rolleyes. Probably should have kept the emotion a bit more in check. No worries.
:: cue dramatic music::
Fritz and Molly were married when they were just chicks, be-fuzzed and innocent, herded together by fate, kept together by love.
There’s was a romance that would transcend time. They lived together, they loved together they died together.
But before they were sent to their untimely demise, Fritz held Molly tighly under his alabaster wing and whispered,
“Do not fear my love…for we shall meet in the afterlife, and even before that, our love shall mingle in the soft and gentle chicken mist that will blow through the land.”
