Yet another request for identifying a 70s pop song

If anyone here can halt the painful burrowing motions that the ignorance of this song creates, I’d be most thankful.

It seems to be a mid-late 1970s tune, if I judge correctly by the synthesiser and the snare drum used. The only lyrics I remember (sung by a low tenor/high baritone voice) of this rather obscure tune (I think) are: I said what? She (or is it I?) said who-who-who-who-who. The note letters of these lyrics are as follows:

I said what?

A# A# F(gliss)A#[sup]8va[/sup]

She (or *I*?) said who-who-who-who-who

A# A# D D# F D A#

The notes then, if I remember, are used in a sawtooth synthesiser riff that I think is part of the chorus (the basic notes I remember follow):

A# A# A# A#A#A# G (repeat twice)

A#[sup]8va[/sup] G F D# D C

The key seems to be in A#, the tempo is around 102 bpm. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Sounds like Undercover Angel by Alan O’Day.

That’s it - beat me to it, Czarcasm.

Number One in July 1977.

Fun fluff.

Yep—both right!

Thanks so much; it’s amazing how one bit of fluff will cause such anxiety…

Now, if only I may help others as I’ve been helped in this regard…

Well thanks a whole hell of a lot.

Now this insipid song, which I thought I had permanently banished from my head, will be bouncing around in there for the next two days.

I’ll get you all for this.

INSIPID!?
That song my friend is the GREATEST one hit wonder of all time.
And I’ll not have you insult it on this message board.
“May the fleas from a thousand camels invade your armpits”.

I dunno—it’s a pretty good song. Plus, the synthesiser sound is rather hip (if for the day), and the drummer is none other than Jeff Porcaro.

I tend to like pop for the musicians that play on the songs, and little more.

No. Midnight At The Oasis is the greatest one hit wonder of all time.

Nah. Come On Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners) and Video Killed the Radio Star (The Buggles) are tied for the spot.

Of course, if you want to get nitpicky, All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) was the greatest one hit wonder of all time. But anyone who thinks of Jimi Hendrix as a one hit wonder is a complete loser.

BTW, Alan O’Day also wrote the haunting Helen Reddy classic “Angie Baby,” a story about a disturbed girl who traps a stalker.

Won’t say where she traps him, though. That would be spoiling it.

I love that song, it brings back a lot of memories.

Interestingly, listeners to the Rollye James show recently voted Midnight at the Oasis “the worst song of all time”. (Also, Ms. Muldaur was actually a “two-hit wonder”, as “I’m A Women” reached #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.)

in her bedside radio(!)

I’ll have to gently disagree with them. I personally find the vocals a tad enthusiastic, but I’m a sucker for “jazz”-type chords.

Worst song of all time?

This really does deserve it’s own thread, doesn’t it?

I’m off to start one.
