Yet another thread about firewalls

I have been using COMODO free firewall with good results - until recently. However, for the past several weeks it has started using large amounts of CPU, as much as 50 or 55% of my RAM of 2 gigs, and slowing things down dramatically. (This is shown by Process Explorer, a program I heartily recommend.)

Do any of you Doper experts have a better recommendation? If it were possible to limit its CPU usage that would be OK, but I haven’t found any way to do that. It just grabs a lot and hangs on.

Since you said Process Explorer, that at the very least tells us you are using a Windows O/S. XP? Vista? 7? It sure would be nice to know.

Microsoft has bundled a firewall since XP SP2. Not good enough that you use a third-party firewall?

Have you looked here? —> http://www.firewallguide.com/

Sorry - forgot to mention that I’m using XP SP3.

I’ve always heard that the bundled Windows firewall was sort of wimpy in its protections. However, I’m about ready to go back to it. Will check the firewallguide.

FWIW, I’ve never used a third-party firewall attached to the O/S. I’ve always left the Windows firewall on default settings, and combined it with my router firewall. The combination seems to work just fine. YMMV.
