I also note that Denethor had no friends, at least none left. It may sound sad, but Aragorn and Gandalf were the closest things he had to friends in the world. Denethor had nobody to support him and his burdens, while he couldn’t show thes in public because of his position.
Book Denethor is a far more interesting character than his filmed counterpart. Too bad, too - John Noble is a brilliant actor, and anyone who’s seen “Fringe” knows how well he can play the tormented and conflicted father.
