Fair enough. I don’t have any particular bone to pick with either of the protagonists, and i wasn’t even involved in the other thread, so i’ll just leave it alone now.
Seconded. I said it in the other thread and I’ll say it again here: I enjoy sven’s posts and her perspective. And you know what? I’m woman enough to admit it without devolving into petty bullshit: she is more well-travelled (and I’ll even say worldly) than me, she is more self-reliant as a result, and she does have a nice peaceful way of looking at things that I can learn from.
I’ll also add: going to Cameroon and to China takes guts, balls, and whatever other body parts you can think of, and most of us don’t have them. She has truly turned her life around one-eighty and put all her smarts to work in the real world, and I really, really admire it. Good on ya, sweetie, and keep talking about Cameroon and all your other travels… I love hearing about it.

Yeah, I don’t know what this was all about. It reminds me of when Nava was Pitted (or almost Pitted, I don’t remember) for supposedly always saying she’s from Spain. Well, yeah, when it’s relevant she’ll bring it up. even sven talks a lot about Cameroon, but it’s relevant and informative. I don’t really know what her “tone” is when she offers advice (I’m not so much about advice threads, I only read lezlers’s because it was linked from here), but in that thread she wasn’t out of line. And I have no problem with lezlers; I don’t know anything about her and had before only noticed her username as being mildly funny, but she was out of line in that thread.
Also, I must take the time to congratulate Koxinga for his posts in that other thread. They were pretty funny.
I don’t think so. It’s for when you have a problem with another poster. lezlers (as well as MBP in Salt Lake, AClockworkMelon, Eyebrows 0f Doom and CrazyCatLady) has a problem with even sven, but won’t actually call her out in the correct place to air grievances, instead just taking pot shots at her in the place where you’re not supposed to do so. Well, even sven has opened a place for all of them to complain and that makes her the most mature of them all, I say.
Honestly, even prr was borderline acceptable in his comments towards even sven in that thread, despite agreeing with her. That’s what the Pit is for, people, you don’t need to feel a burning desire to call somebody a cunt to bring a dispute here.
Yeah, she makes me feel inadequate as well. So does Kyla. But it’s only because their experience highlights my own shortcomings. I’ve only got myself to blame.
That can’t all be blamed on her social life.
I’ve been on this board for several years, just like you (although I left for a while). I used to be really awkward and insecure, and that came across on the boards, and I felt like you looked down on me for being awkward and needy. In fact when I came back to the boards, I used to avoid reading or replying to your posts (as well as a a variety of other people) because of it, because I didn’t want to deal with that. But I realized it really wasn’t a big deal even if people did.
Aside from that, I think your life is interesting. Like I said, I know you’ve posted here for years. I know you grew up in poverty, studied film and then struggled with finding your calling in life after graduation. And the fact that you’ve found something you really enjoy and are good at (international development) is interesting to read about. Not only that but you went from growing up in poverty to working in areas where you always earn more money than you need to fund your living expenses. Its kindof like Manda JO said. It was interesting to watch you transform from someone stuck in a cycle of poverty who didn’t know what you wanted in life, to someone who makes more money than she spends who has found her calling.

I’m really bad about remembering people. I need to think about a spreadsheet to remind me who is who. People have to really do something (good or bad!) to ping my remembering.
**Even sven **is someone I don’t know at all. I’ve seen her name on here as long as I’ve been here, but I honestly can’t say I remember anything about her except that she is female.
Now I want to read all of her posts to see what the hell people are bitching about! The comment she made in lezler’s thread was a normal comment that simply disagreed with the OP. It wasn’t condescending. It wasn’t pointedly mean. She offered a different opinion and even suggestions. The people who came in to hate on her really made themselves look like asses. But, true to form for me, I can’t remember who they were. :smack:
Nope. Lezlers wanted to drop it, but first had to get a few more jabs in. And then later, a few more. How she didn’t get a warning I do not know.

Only thing I have to say about this is…my username is lezlers, not “lezzie.” If you’re going to insult me so viciously based on some rather tame snarkiness in a IMHO forum, you can at least get that much right.

And I find this annoying. We had bashed heads in a few threads leading up to that and her post put me over the edge. Probably wasn’t a good place to bring the snark but I didn’t think my general annoyance with her warranted a pit thread so instead of just rolling my eyes and ignoring her, I snarked a bit and some other posters joined in. If I was that out of line, you’d think a mod would’ve intervened.
Wow, you got all that from that party thread? Impressive. Considering about 80% of the replies that weren’t sven related were in agreement with me with respect to the hostess being out of line, you might want to work a little on your insight.
Would it dissapoint you to know I don’t even play video or computer games? Or role playing or any of that stuff? We’re talking about monopoly and yatzee here. Now, in my experience, people who sign every post with “regards” are pompus assholes. Of course, you might be a very nice person, but I just felt like insulting you so I picked something totally out of the blue to grab on to, like your gaming thing. Fun, aint it?

I didn’t even know even sven had been in Cameroon. I thought she had been in China. Now, I find out that she has been in both. Who cares? Honestly. Good for her and all. But, who cares either way? I don’t think it makes her opinion more valid, nor do I think it means I have to listen more closely to what she has to say. (Well. Lots of people care. It is exciting and awesome to join the peace corps. I just mean who cares in reference to what weight we give her opinions.)
All of our experiences color our opinions. When she tells a story about teaching a bunch of kids and how they react it makes a lot of sense for her to tell her from the start that the kids are in China. So, yes, she might mention she was there a lot. But, if she didn’t people would be asking to get some context.
I didn’t think any of sven’s posts in that thread were condescending. I couldn’t understand where lezlers was coming from in her response to sven. Further, I thought the pile on that was starting based on lezler’s reply was idiotic. And, I thought lezler’s attempt to let it drop might have been successful if she actually dropped it.
I really didn’t know anything about even sven before this either, but I sure do like a fiesty woman.

Also, I never even knew sven had lived in Camaroon. Or China. Don’t really care. That stuff was said by other posters. Maybe someone can start a pit thread about it?
The Dope has a disproportionate amount of introverted shut ins (for lack of a better word) . I come here when I want thoughtful or varied takes on interpersonal issues, but I don’t really take Doper’s advice on normal social interaction. I wasn’t basing my opinion on just the party thread anyway.
Seriously? Shut up, you weren’t even around then. She knows that’s a compliment - a lot of us have her on our “Most Improved Doper” awards list.
Besides, upon re-reading the thread, I see a fair amount of dissent anyway. Some people thought that she was taking your for a ride, some people thought she was just a bit clueless and disorganized, and some people thought that you offered to bring the dessert and the games were no big deal. You worked out the situation to your satisfaction, and that’s fine. My point is that in a thread asking for opinions “You’re just a stupid college kid” isn’t really an appropriate response to a dissenting opinion that most people agree wasn’t rudely offered in the first place. When people started getting a little miffed, your attempt to manipulate the situation by insulting her while still attempting to fool us into thinking you were taking the high ground (“Dude, just ignore her condescending, bitchy posts and let’s all move on and have cake! WHY DO EXPECT ME TO BRING CAKE?!?!?!???!!??”) was shitty form.
