Yogi Beraisms

Ever coin one yourself? If so, post it here. Mine is “I’ve created a monster in my own image”.

I certainly wasn’t the first to coin it, but I’ve been known to say “We’ll burn that bridge when we get to it.”

A Berraism is a quote that makes no sense, and you know exactly what it means.

My favorite one is in my sig.

Most of this game is 50% percentages.

You can lead a horse, but you can’t make a sow disperse.

Our version is “We’ll jump off that bridge when we get to it.”

My favorite has always been: “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”

According to wikipedia, he was referring to the St. Louis restaurant, Ruggeri’s.

90% of this game is half mental.
Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore; it’s too crowded.
If you see a fork in the road, take it.
It ain’t over 'til it’s over.

… and here’s a few more.

I just looked up one of my favorites and found out that it wasn’t a Berraism, but by Ted Williams, of all people:

“If you don’t think too good, don’t think too much”

My favorite is
“It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.”

which I actually used in a paper.

We’ve all got our own cross to burn.

I heard this one: “I’ve never hit a woman, and I’ll never do it again!”

Sticking to the O.P., here’s one I came up with. Feel free to borrow it or use it as you like.

“Not only is he out to lunch, he’s staying for Happy Hour.”

As for a quote by Yogi himself, Whitey Ford swears this is true. Whitey and Yogi were sitting next to each other at Yankee Stadium for Old Timers’ Day in 2004 when a list of deceased Yankee stars was posted on the scoreboard. Yogi turned to Whitey and said, “Boy, I hope I never see my name up there.”

My favorite:
“the future ani’t what it used to be”

I used to have a boss who said,

“It’s half o’ six o’ one, a dozen o’ the other.”

Yeah, he was an idiot.

There’s also: “Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.”

And my own: “History ain’t what it used to be.”

Another favorite: “pair up in threes.”

Bite your tongue! It takes a genius to be that stupid. Even if he didn’t always say what he said, it was always clear what he meant, except when it wasn’t.

Making these up is fun. If you try hard enough, it should come naturally.

I’ve used “Green as a stop sign.” before when trying to describe a particular metalic color.

Supposed his secretary once asked him if she could dispose of the really old office records, as they were running out of storage room. “Sure” sad Yogi, “but make copies first, just in case we need them again”.
