The other thing about York is that we have an unusually large number of Werewolves around here. You’ll want to invest in Wolvsbane, and keep a handy supply of Silver bullets around.
Thanks, Scylla. It looks like I’ll be training my dog not to chase groundhogs. (Because training her not to chase skunks worked so well.)
Unfortunately, my parents have decided to live in one of the “neo-suburbs” (just north of Shiloh, with the charming name of “Oatfield Court”). I grew up in Central PA (Montgomery, 6 miles south of Williamsport) and I’ve taken loads of trips to PA Dutch country, so I know what I’m in for there. Baltimore is actually not so far for a day trip, being only 40-50 miles away, as, growing up in an even more centrally isolated area, I used to take day trips to places of 100 or more miles away.
After I finish my dissertation (should be by about February) I’ll be looking for somewhere else to live. I’d like to live somewhere within about 20 miles of York; but within striking distance of Philadelphia/Baltimore/Washington, because of this league. I know the idea of cricket in the southeast PA/Maryland area may sound profoundly weird, but, hey, I’ve got brand new gear. Apparently US cricketers live and breathe road trips, from the look of the schedules posted.
Anyway, thanks to all you Dopers for telling me about York. I think.
Duke -
I actually need to head up to York sometime after New Year’s to do some outlet shopping. Wanna do lunch?
And alas, the only thing I know about York is that the Gabriel’s off I-83 is a great outlet.
Geez, how could I forget TMI?! It’s in my abforementioned hometown of Middletown. In fact, I could see the cooling towers from the hill behind my house. You can take a tour if you want, but I never did. Actually, it’d probably be pretty interesting to me now. Perhaps I’ll go next time I’m in town.
I was sitting here in Lousiana watching CNN Headline News last year, not realizing it was the 20th anniversery of the almost-meltdown, when suddenly I saw one of my middle school teachers appear on the screen. I almost spit out my soda. Strange seeing someone you know on TV, especially when you’re not expecting it.
Duke, I’d have killed to trade places with you growing up. The land is so pretty up near Williamsport. I used to go up there every weekend when I was dating a girl from Montoursville. Her sister died in the TWA 800 crash. Man, that was such a depressed little town in the aftermath of that crash. 30-some school kids from Montoursville killed. I can’t even imagine…
Falcon: You need to go outlet shopping? What, do you have a note from your doctor or something? Lunch would be great, just e-mail me at some point in the new year (don’t worry, I’ll remember if you don’t). Currently my calendar just stops dead at the 22nd.
neutron: Well, the Williamsport area is a great place in some regards. It’s quiet, not a bad place to grow up; there are some events and places of interest, most famously the Little League World Series. The worst thing about the place is that it’s miles and miles from any large city, and although it has more than its fair share of amenities, it’s a letdown if you grew up anywhere larger.
I wasn’t actually living in the area during the time of the TWA 800 crash, but my parents and most of my friends were. It was an absolutely terrible time; as happens in most small places, everyone knew someone who was on the plane. My friend Eric was a substitute teacher at Montoursville and taught many of those who were killed. He said the school was just devastated. Yes, it was a tough time.
