As I see it, even if you are not an excaped con you couldn’t pull it off without a false identity. Tracking people’s real identities seems to be trivially easy these days, for someone determined enough. Just look at what’s available on line.
And once you have a false identity, you are already committing a crime and relying on false documents, and generally face many of the same problems that escaped cons face.
The real advantage you have over the escaped con is that the police are not after you as hard as they are after the escapee, and there’s not nearly as much publicity about you. Otherwise you’re pretty much in the same boat.
