You call THAT close?????

It’s my job as a sports editor to publish stuff like Pop Warner football. I can do that. But the people who write up the game stories — JESUS! They will never let the facts get in the way of their desire to write something positive and uplifting and smiley about their precious, adorable, snuggy-poo little rugrats.

I just got this one tonight.

“The first year Knights Midgets earned the respect form the league as they played Oak Grove close throughout the game.”

YOU LOST 35-6! Which part of the game were you playing them close? The part where they were scoring touchdowns on you seemingly at will? Or was it the part where your offense could hardly get anything accomplished? If this is close, I’d hate to see what you think is a blowout.

Yeah, but you can’t have a bunch of little kids thinking they’re losers. Their parents wouldn’t be able to handle that.

That kind of spin belongs in the recounts to friends and relatives. It does not belong in a newspaper.

When I write summaries for my hockey teams webpage, I usually call any score a close score, or indicate the final score didn’t reflect the closeness of the game. Its done to purposely poke fun at those very articles the OP is talking about. We also used to make us underdogs by huge pointspreads, then brag about “only” losing by 7 goals.

My soccer coach used to announce that we “came in second place!”

We lost one game 13-0. It was not a good year.

If I ever have children, I may have to bar them from playing sports just so I don’t run the risk of sending similar drivel into the local paper.
