I don’t know Jeans On but the others are fun. I’m going to sing Undercover Angel all day now.
Just as an aside… when I was a kid and I watched the Billy Jack movies I didn’t know what the lyrics were. I thought it was "Go ahead and hate youe neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven you can justify an Indian.
Either way it still holds true.
Nope. Most of my iPod library is made up of my old mp3 library, which was acquired…shadily. So, basically, if it wasn’t available on WinMX or (old-school) Napster, I probably don’t have it.
It should be noted that ever since I received my iPod as a gift two years ago, I’ve been strictly iTunes…
Has Been as an album is a bit of a pain in the ass…Common People, Has Been, and I Can’t Get Behind That are pretty awesome. Familiar Love, Ideal Woman, and Real are ok, but, not great - they’re the songs that I need to be in the right mood for - It Hasn’t Happened Yet, and the stretch from That’s Me Trying to Together are absolutely awful. As awesome as Common People is, that stretch is awful.
I don’t know how popular this is right now but I am jamming to Jai Ho.
Yeah? Pump it up.
Don’t get crazy, cause I’m also revving up to Three Wooden Crosses. And I’m a heathen.
The line is "I’ve
been undressed by Kings and I’ve seen some things that a woman ain’t s’posed to see’
So it’s in the realm of Arabian types, I suppose. Anyway, the song suits me.
I love most of the songs listed here, too, which is why I don’t usually get into the ‘worst songs’ threads here. I have … odd… taste in music.
I love Barry Manilow and Celine Dione. My CD commection includes ‘The Partridge Family’s Greatest Hits’, "Shaun Cassidy’s Greatest Hits’ and “The Osmond Brothers’ Greatest Hits” (Admittedly, none of these gets played more than once every couple years, but they are nostalgic for me)
I love most all of the 70’s soft pop or whatever you want to call it. I grew up listening to it, and it is like comfort food for my ears.
I’m definitely not one who slags off on this song. I love it because I think it’s hilarious! I always imagine Ben Stiller as Zoolander delivering that monologue in the middle. It’s just so EARNEST!
Yeah, yeah, I get it. It’s preposterous, and so much like a bad Lifetime movie. I can’t help it though, this song is like my life, sue me, mmkay?
Barry Manilow and Celine Dion are my faves too. I think we may be twins, but I hate the Osmond Brothers as a whole. The Partridge Family rocks, as far as I’m concerned and I will admit to having some wild fantasies about Shaun Cassidy.
sprints out of thread, proceeds to get bent
The first Artist on my I-Pod is…Andy Gibb. Yes, Yes, I know.
He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother is one of my most favorite tracks ever!
Also, the music from the Muppet movies is almost all universally awesome, in particular the soundtrack to The Muppet Movie (which includes Rainbow Connection) and The Muppets Take Manhattan (Together Again and Saying Goodbye).
Brilliant songwriting across the board.
The thing I can’t get past is the underlying asumption that a woman is either a dutiful housewife or a whore. And that ‘going out to find yourself’ will result, inevitably, in the latter.
“Let Your Love Flow” is a great song! I generally can’t stand country-type music, but I always liked that one. Ditto “My Maria”, “Kiss You All Over”, and…wait for it…“The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA”.
“Three Wooden Crosses”, not so much, though. I always call it “The Dead Hooker Song”. Yeah, I know, she lives and the preacher dies, but its funnier my way.
“Never Been to Me” is one I enjoy only for its comedy value (which is substantial). “One Tin Soldier” is actually a pretty good song if you can separate it from the movie.
I too enjoy '70s era AM fare. Some of my downloads:
“Eres Tu” by Mocedades
“Run To Me” by the Bee Gees
“Help Is On Its Way” by the Little River Band
“The Show Must Go On” by Three Dog Night
“Sweet Mary” by Wadsworth Mansion
“Garden Party” by Rick Nelson
“Suavecito” by Malo
“Stoney End” by Barbra Streisand
Regarding the first one on the list: I wasn’t crazy about the movie Tommy Boy, but one of my favorite scenes is the one where they’re driving down the highway and “Eres Tu” comes on the radio. They start out saying God what a stupid song and such, but by the end of the song, they’re both singing it out loud and crying!
I can relate!
BTW, Abby, great thread title!
I could never understand why the guy is so damned afraid to sing an “R.”
"He ain’t heavy, he’s my brothooooooo." Dagnabbit, sing the R! On Talk Like A Pirate Day, I bet he sings, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brotharrrrrrr.”
Gentle on my Mind and Wichita Lineman are unappreciated bits of perfection.
I defy anyone to listen to this David Bromberg version of Mr. Bojanges and come back and tell me that it sucks:
Looking through this thread, I’m wondering if I’m reading the SDMB or looking at the back of the dust jacket to K-Tel’s “22 Explosive Hits!”
I’ll admit to liking a lot of the songs mentioned too. When I saw the thread title, “One Tin Soldier” popped into my head. And I still like Alan O’Day’s “Undercover Angel” and Sammy Johns’ “Chevy Van.” But nobody has yet said one of my long-time faves though: “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl).”
Ah, Looking Glass. That’s played at least twice a day for the last two weeks on our local mix station.
I just remembered “Captain of Her Heart” by Double, and looked it up. I was shocked! It was released in 1985! I was sure it was a very early 80s/late 70s song…
