MAGA bobble hats for when you’re cold and a baseball cap won’t cut it…
Makes too much sense.
There’s a huge difference between normal political discussions, even partisan ones, and the obscenity that is Trump.
And that’s another thing that I like about this: they are refusing to normalize this.
I think it’s important for the country that in the future, past support for Trump is seen as disgusting and shameful, in order to minimize the chance of another Trump being elected. With that in mind, I support Ravelry and other private organizations that choose to do things like this.
The statement addressed that. White supremacy is not a political opinion.
Seems to be a further fracturing of the American population. I do not like that.
More accurately speaking, the group’s administrators aren’t having it.
Yes, it represents a further unraveling of the fabric of our body politic, by dyed-in-the-wool leftists intent on needling their adversaries, rather than helping to stitch together our great divide.
What a depressing thread.
Those posts are both sarcasm, right?
Because of that policy RPG.net is now much more enjoyable and better for discussion of elfgames. All the trolls trying to “trigger the Libs” or whatever got kicked. It’s great.
Because that’s generally a talking point of people trying to silence minorities and vulnerable groups. Someone mentions they’re a minority, or brings up an LGBT topic, or talks about privilege and suddenly it’s “Why does everything have to be about politics?”
The existence of minorities, or LGBT people, or privilege isn’t political: it’s reality. And those people mentioning how Trumpism has negatively affected them also isn’t politics: it’s their life. So if you try to ban “political” discussions, you risk silencing those people.
Ha-ha, but seriously, did you read what nearwildheaven said about some aggressive MAGAts on Ravelry maliciously doxxing the people who reported their posts as inappropriate? And the new policy guidelines I posted where Ravelers are prohibited from “entrapping” Trump supporters into voicing support, or “antagonizing” conservative members for their unstated positions?
And you want to spin this as leftists responsible for “further unraveling of the fabric of our body politic”? Bullshit. This, like most pro-Trump political activity, is about a bunch of spiteful conservatives deliberately trying to piss off liberals and then getting upset when the adults in the room won’t let them.
What this means is that people can’t post patterns for toques that say ‘build the wall’ or ‘you can grab MY pussy Mr. Trump’ or ‘lock her up’.
If someone posts a pattern for a rainbow hat, or trans-pride scarf, people can’t rush in and call them abominations, and explain how they are going to hell.
If someone mentions that the fibre art world needs to be better at inclusion and listening to voices other than those of white women, people can’t roll their eyes and complain about the site being all ‘political’
As far as I’m concerned, all of these are good things. And as a non-American, this miasma of political sludge you have brewing down there is really tedious. I’m actually really looking forward to being able to quietly search for a sweater pattern without all that bullshit popping up.
I’m pretty much there for the patterns and the database. (and I also need to update my patterns), but it is a community. The toe dipping I’ve done into the community has been overall pleasant - very helpful if you are wondering how to do a M1…
LOTS of Europeans on the board - it feels like lots of Germans in particular. I’m not even sure that the majority of the board population is American - but it is sure self centered of us Americans to believe it is and that our standards for discourse should prevail. The German government has a much different definition of free speech when it comes to hate speech than we do.
My current project is a shawl in Ace colors bought for my Ace/Aro daughterish bought from the local queer owned fiber store during Pride month - in part to support the store, in part to support my kid. Oh, the yarn is from a queer owned producer as well.
And that is the sort of thing that if you share on Ravelry, you shouldn’t get “your daughter and you are going to go to hell.”
Knitting is one of the more peaceful, meditative and contemplative hobbies I’m aware of. Its been AWESOME for my mental health and stability. I am so glad I took it up - and its on my list of suggestions for people who are struggling with depression and anxiety. And that is what a lot of knitters use it for. People don’t need to be vilified while in harmless pursuit of a hobby that they are doing because it makes them mentally healthier.
Please understand that the tedium you feel is enviable to many of us having to live in the middle of it.
Maybe because it’s not necessary to punish everyone for the abuses of some very obvious bad actors? Maybe because free platforms don’t owe anyone a reason?
*We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. *
Ummm! That’s some good irony!
Last night when I checked (just click on the number of Ravelers online on the home page) and you can see where posters are. #1 was USA, #2 was Germany although it was late in the evening in the Central time zone, where I live, and morning in Germany. Not all the locales were countries; England and Guernsey were included. Didn’t see Antarctica, but I’d say at least 50 nations and territories were.
No it isn’t.
Great post. Now I understand what was going on.
