You can sometimes find too much on the net

Wife was feeling ill and asked that I call the woman she drives to work to let her know she needed to find another way to get there. Of course, she didn’t have her phone number, so I tried Googling her.

“No phone number, but did you know she has a record? Petty theft at 17, charges dropped, and aggravated assault last year.”

“It was just a slap fight between a couple of drunks. Nothing that would stand in her way in the world of customer service. Some companies use real convicts for it.”

Okay, now I’m nervous about how much info a simple Google search can reveal and more nervous than ever about giving my credit card numbers to some stranger on the phone.

Sometimes it really comes in handy, too. A few years ago I went to Tombstone for the weekend with a friend, and met this guy, seemed real nice. He asked me to come back the next weekend to go on a date with him. I got his name, and looked him up on the public access to court information site online. Turns out he was 12 years older than he said he was, and had a court date coming up for the stalking and assault on his newly-ex-wife, when he’d told me he had never been married. So, ya know, it’s a trade-off.
