"You Can't Win!" Radio Contest

On the syndicated radio show Mark and Brian there is a contest called “You Can’t Win!”, which involves answering 5 very hard questions to win a few thousand dollars worth of prizes. Question #1 is:

This tradition was started as an attempt to keep America beautiful. It’s execution was immediate, and a cash fine was part of it’s enforcement. What is this tradition called?
Who invented it? For what purpose?

The best anyone has come up with is “Earth Day”, which is a totally lame answer, IMHO. Please give answers that fit the WHOLE question, please!

My best memory of the “Keep America Beautiful” program was that it started under Lady Bird Johnson. There were commemorative postage stamps issued with this theme. Of course, this might not have been the beginning.

I’d like to mention that this is NOT the same “you can’t win” show that appears on BOB and Brians morning program on WLZR in Milwaukee. (You know, the one that’s driving you all nuts with the “what happens on May 33rd, but only on leap years” )

Littering As a child i rember seeing signs that it was a 50$ fine. Thats all I know.

pkbites, I’ve been getting an unbelievable number of emails on this one. You see, I am the author of a proposal to revise the calendar into 10 months, either 36 or 37 days long. So in my calendar, there is a May 33rd. My May 33rd translates to June 28th on the Gregorian calendar, which is far as I can tell ain’t nothing special. Not only that, but my calendar takes its leap day in February, just like the regular one.

My calendar can be found at http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/7988/.
