Quebec Woman, world’s oldest, dies at 115
Just last month, Julie Winnefred Bertrand made it to the top of the heap - she was the world’s oldest woman. But did she get to enjoy it, after all those years of watching the ones in front of her drop off the list? Nooo - she died this week.
In a side-note, she once seems to have dated a young lawyer from the area, a chap named Louis St. Laurent.
RIP, Mlle Bertrand.
Sweet, I moved up one spot in the ranking.
Poor Julie. The top must have been awful lonely, but just think of all the things that that woman had seen! The mind boggles.
On a similar note, and this may sound unbelievable, but at one time in my life, I was the youngest person in the world.
Huh. Last month, Pierre Trudeau was born, and this month, we find that St. Laurent’s ex-girlfriend was the oldest person in the world. It’s been a strange month for Canadian prime ministers.
Though for all-time history-repeats-itself fun, old John A.'s lineal descendent became Canada’s Foreign Secretary (and of course MP for Kingston). And when Princess Di’s husband-to-be visited Kingston on a tour of Canada, they couldn’t resist the temptation to play it out: Flora MacDonald took Bonnie Prince Charlie over the sea to… Wolfe Island.
Oldest person. There’s this guy in Puerto Rico that’s been slightly older then her for over 115 years.
Isn’t it possible that the reward for becoming the oldest person in the world is finally getting to die?
Cute kid. But he’s going to grow up with a lot of nominative determinism to deal with…
I meant woman. Dammit! I missed my first real chance to edit.
Poly, I don’t think Flora Macdonald is any connexion of Sir John (other than both being part of the great Clan Donald, of course - where’s the tartan smiley when you need it?)
Sir John had two sons and one daughter. His first son, John Alexander, died in infancy, and the daughter, Margaret Mary, was mentally handicapped - I don’t think she ever married.
His second son, Sir Hugh John Macdonald (1850-1929), went on to become a federal Cabinet minister, Premier of Manitoba, and a judge. Hugh John had one son, John Alexander, who died at age 19 without issue, and three daughters, who married but who took their husbands’ names, such as Daisy Gainsford.
