You don't know Jack . . .

We’re considering the name “Jack” for our baby boy due to be born at the end of February. Possibly “John” with “Jack” being the everyday-used nickname or maybe just “Jack” on the birth certificate.

At any rate, would you Dopers out there please list the top 3 “Jacks” that come to mind when you hear the name - good, bad, and ugly, as long as they are famous (or infamous). Real people, TV/Movie/Lit characters, etc.

thanks in advance -

…Chick?

…the Ripper?

…Nicklaus?

Kennedy, Nicklaus, Nicholson.

My father and brother are named Jack. A fine name!

Wolfman Jack.
Jack Tripper.
Jack Daniels!

I already HAVE a Jack…w00t!

Most frequently heard in my house:

“Hit the road, Jack - and don’t you come back no more no more NO MORE no more!”

Hope he doesn’t end up with a complex.

Three posts in a row …

Have you considered Batty as a middle name?

Jack- the Robin Williams movie.

Jack Torrance- from “The Shining”

And Jack Nicholson, the most evil Jack of all- yes, that’s including Jack the Ripper.

Jack Paar
Jack Benny
Jack Sprat

Would you name him just Jack or maybe Jackson? I like that name. Also, FWIW, Babynamer has a section for nicknames or drawbacks for each name, so you can see what he might be teased with for whatever you name him. Happy naming!

I’m called Jack FWIW. I got teased about nursery rhymes at primary school, but your kid’ll get teased about something.

I’m looking at babynamer, and thinking that if you won’t call your kid Jack out of fear that someone’ll say Jack, Jack, he’s a leggo menaic you’d best give up now

If you’re not sure go for John obviously, but if you like Jack, I’d say go for that. I find it very nice to have one name I can use for bank accounts, etc, and not get the “Sorry, sir, these accounts are in different names - ‘John Shade’ and ‘Jack Shade,’ we can’t help you” problem ever.

A lot of great men named Jack. And I guess some infamous ones too.

But, imho, it’s an excellent choice. I know it sounds corney, or maybe sexist, but it’s a “real man” name. I like my name, but it has a perpetual youth thing to it. Cool sometimes, but names like Frank, Chuck, and Jack just say there’s a man in the room.
