I’m sorry-but she bought Kate Spade purses, Prada shoes, BCBG purses, cameras, scanners…it seems. Not just a lot of stuff-but designer goods.
You know, she’s selling her stuff on ebay. That’s GOOD.
But I’m sorry, I don’t feel bad for her.
I guess I’m being a bit harsh, it’s just that I’m bitter.
See, people like her are what people who criticize us liberal do-gooders think we’re helping. They say, oh, it’s just spoiled brats who can’t control themselves.
I mean, she’s obviously clever enough to think up the website-why not put the energy into trying something else?
Well, Beagledave, it just seems there is real anger pouring out at this woman, both here and elsewhere, and no, in my recollection and experience, people do not generally get royally pissed off at people who have done no harm to anyone, either by word or deed.
As to her laziness… well, assuming that everything she has said on her website is true (and given that much of it is unflattering, we have no reason to believe otherwise), she also talks about how much she works and what she is doing on her own to raise the funds. She doesn’t sound at all lazy to me.
I agree that getting 20K in the hole buying status bullshit is lame. But I think buying status bullshit when you can afford it is lame.
But really, she seems pretty up front about it all, she also seems to have learned a hard lesson and is mending her ways. I think what she has done is pretty enterprising and funny, and I can understand someone sending her a buck just for giving them a giggle.
And I still don’t understand why anyone would be angry at her or consider her a “fucking bitch” over it.
Karyn (Bostack or Bostick is her last name, btw)was on the Today Show this morning. She’s college educated, well spoken, and actually rather cute, but shallow as a teaspoon and utterly reprehensible – even moreso now, I think, that she’s gone public via mass media.
She has got a job – in television. My guess is that she’s probably a PA or low level producer or editor or something, though I must admit that learning this info only serves to heighten my suspicions that this whole thing may be some elaborate “reality entertainment” scheme or twisted performance art piece. She claims herself to be a good Catholic girl from the midwest (Indiana somewhere) who just “got in over her head” but at least she was “helping the economy.”
Uh huh.
Having seen her yipping about the $5,000+ that she’s raised so far from donations and eBay sales, I wanted to smack her smug face. She is thoroughly unapologetic and completely unwilling to accept responsibility for her own overspending.
She also says that if she gets her debts paid off, she’d like to keep the domain and use it to collect donations in this same vein for some other idiot who never figured out how to live within their means.
When good, decent people spend themselves foolishly into more debt than they can pay in a reasonable amount of time, they get a second job, sometimes even a third. If push comes to shove, they declare bankruptcy. They don’t beg, especially not from strangers. It’s just tacky and repulsive, and not only do I think Karyn should be highly ashamed of herself, so should every idiot who has given this undeserving little twit a single penny.
My ire knows no boundaries. It is as vast as the universe and will not be contained.
Can’t see any reason to save it up.
True. She’s not being dishonest. But she is presenting herself as a charity case. Every dollar I give to the Red Cross is a dollar that I don’t give to Make-A-Wish. And every dollar that’s given to pay off this credit card debt is a dollar that could have gone somewhere worthwhile.
I mean, people think it’s so “cute” to give her money. I’d rather give my money to someone who REALLY needs it.
I’m NOT saying that she can’t bitch or moan about her predicament. She can. But to set up a site for her own “charity”, well, that’s just rather shallow.
All the time spent on the computer could be time spent clipping coupons, volunteering, perhaps looking into credit counseling, or whatever. And as far as “I’m not going to declare bankrupcy”, because “you’d pay for on your tax dollars…” well, whatever.
She makes it harder for us liberals to talk about those who need help.
If this is so, then who has done the bad? Certainly not her, she didn’t pick your pocket. It is you who made the poor choice of giving money to her instead of to Make-A-Wish. It’s the old saying: “no harm in asking!”
The universe, for being an unrepetant, self-aggrandizing screw-up? The general public, for wasting our time and trying our patience by foisting her cold-hearted “sob” story on us and expecting us to give a damn? Common sense for ignoring it for the last several years?
Having stewed over this for a while now, I have come to the conclusion that what she has done is just tacky rather than evil. In her view of things, getting people to send her money was easier than getting a second or third job. At this juncture, I can’t really fault her for taking the money and running. In month, she has made up to $5000. I can’t think of any second job that would pay so well.
The people that I would really condemn for this are the idiots who are giving her money so she can bail herself out. Of all the things I would spend my money on, this comes dead last after aged roadkill. I would like to know what one of her charitable contributors is thinking when they give her the money. What would possess someone to give their hard earned dollars to a complete stranger who ran up their debt on expensive designer goods that she couldn’t afford?
What’s truly appalling is that she probably won’t have to declare any of this as income - everything that comes into her is either a gift (if a donation) or is a loss sale (marked-down Kate Spade on Ebay).
I’m not a tax lawyer, but from what I recall from my income taxation class, the IRS has a difficult time characterizing panhandler’s proceeds as “income” - they’re not actually doing anything for the donor. So these are gifts. And gifts aren’t taxed to the recipient - they’re taxed to the donor as part of the estate tax, which doesn’t kick in till the donor coughs up $20,000 in a year to the same recipient. (Do not ask for more of an explanation, or I’ll give it to you. You’ve been warned.)
It’s why my tax prof used to get so incensed - she’d read that some panhandlers were making more in a year than people who clean the Port Authority toilets, who of course are subject to income and payroll tax. Not fair.
And what we have here is a high-class panhandler. Well, no-class, really.
What she did isn’t all that much different than cam girls who ask for gifts and money. But, at least with cam girls, you get SOMETHING in return. With this woman, you supposedly get “good karma”, which to me, looks like nothing.
Karyn is a selfish lowlife, and an unmitagated lout. (screw spelling, I’m pissed)
I’m 20 grand in the hole. Yup, it’s partly my fault. The other part is trying to pay off my fucking student loan for my fucking USLESS Bachelor degree (the only job I’ve been able to get since February pays a whole $8 and hour) and paying of the thousands of dollars in medical bills that my USLESS insurance didn’t cover when I had to go to the ER 3 fucking times in 6 months and then have surgery.
I have cleaned out all my savings. Emptied my IRA’s and 401K’s with SIGNIFICANT penalties so I can pay my mortgage.
I’m not above asking for help, but this is beyond the bounds of reason. Anyone who sends her money, might as well make out a check to Jim Baker while they’re at it.
Karyn, she’s special. She’s the Human Barnacle.
Shoot, I think she is funny and have often dreamed of my debt being paid off. For the amount I have contributed to vegas or the ca lottery I could have sure made that number more than four thousand!!
FTR I have (a few times) thought liberals were too soft on people but please don’t think someone like Karyn with her disigner goods ever crossed my mind.
Karma is something I believe in and that account keeps a balance so either she is going in debt there or has already paid in.
