"You gave hope to the Regions / Rome could be defeated."

I know this is a long shot - but does anyone recognise the quote in the title?

I always believed it was the wording on the plaque on the statue of Boadicea (Boudicca) on the Thames Embankment (London) - in fact, I would swear blind I used to have a photo of this very plaque.

The thing is, a recent trip to London revealed that the plaque actually reads, “Regions Caesar never knew / Thy posterity shall sway.”

So where have the words “You gave hope…” come from? They would seem to fit the story of Boadicea quite neatly, so surely could not have just popped out of my brain. And yet an internet search has turned up nothing.

Any ideas?

Not really, although the quote is familiar to me, too, in a context with “Boadicea”. If it’s not on the statue then I dunno where it’s from. Possibly a poem? You’re right, there’s nothing on Google, although all that proves is that nobody’s linked to it yet.

Nifty statue, though. They don’t really “do” big civic statues anymore, do they?

Thanks for looking, Ms Goose - if you can’t find it on the net, then no-one can.
