You have just dropped a cookie on the floor

5 second rule if I’m at my house or my Mom’s. Trash everywhere else. Especially work, this carpet is disgusting.

I remember the first time I heard about the five second rule. I was in 4th or 5th grade and my best friend and I were walking home from school. He dropped a candy bar he was eating, picked it up from the grass, blew it off, and continued to eat it. I guess he saw my look of shock so he calmly said, “5 second rule. Can’t waste perfectly good candy, can I?” LOL.

So here’s my question then. Or rather, a couple of questions. First off, pizza left out from the day (or two days) before is no good anymore? Does that same rule apply to fried chicken? Because I’ve always maintained that both pizza and fried chicken reach their maximum delectability after a minimum of one night sitting on the counter. My other question regards things in the trash (I’m pretty sure that after this thread I will have lost any hope of dating anybody who reads this). My roommate worked at a very fanshy smanshy delicatessen that imports food from all over the world. She had this fish thing that she didn’t want, so she wrapped it up and tossed it in. Remember: she wrapped it up. Anyway, after seeing her calmly throw away a $15 piece of small fish (I can’t remember what kind it was), I couldn’t let this pass. So I ate it. Needless to say, my girlfriend was horrified when I proudly told her this story later. I thought I had done something good! All those starving children in Somalia and what not.

Perfect. What a man! I am so there. Ahem…except one teeny tiny change. It’s gotta be tomato soup with grilled cheese. And in a cup, not a bowl. Yum!

I have never managed to do that, alas, though I do often find bits of the glass with the bottom of my foot later on.

Or as my Aunt Ethel says: “Every person eats a couple of pounds of dirt in his or her lifetime. You might as well get started.”

Weeeelllll, I didn’t have any adverse reactions from eating my counter-pizza, but the general wisdom is that it’s not a good idea to eat food left sitting out on the counter. From the National Institute of Health:

Doesn’t stop me though. Only thing that’ll keep me from day-old counter pizza is pouring pavement pizza shortly thereafter. I am coming down with a cold though.

A little anecdote from on-the-job: Some time ago, a co-worker had unwrapped some pastries to put out for sale, but discovered they were already a little stale. So, she tossed them in the garbage still in the package. Lo and behold, manager comes around, sees the package of pastry sitting on top of the trash in the can and asks why they were thrown out. Not satisfied with the response, she takes them out and determines they are still fresh enough to sell. Shortly after she left, they were again removed from the counter and thrown out by disgusted and utterly appalled subordinates.

You make the call.

Ummmm, yuck! I mean, making the call for you, yourself, to retrieve something from the trash can and eat it, well, that’s a personal decision. The manager in this case was making that decision for the potential customers. There’s a huge difference here!

You need to get you a big dust mop. It takes just a minute to run it across the floors everyday and I’ve got a lot of floor.

Tomato soup’d work…I just make a pretty damned good batch of chicken noodle though. When you’re feeling a little weak. Somebody doing a nice thing like fixing you a big batch of REAL chicken noodle soup and a grilled cheese done right. Well, that alone will make you feel a little bit better.

I’ve gone to the store late at night several times to get what I needed.
For a quick, good bowl try two or three cans of chicken stock, a can of breast meat, a bag of real egg noodles and in the freezer section get a bag seasoning mix. The one that has a mix w/ onion, garlic, red and green pepper…etc. It takes just a few minutes. There are probably some canned soups that are good but when I looked they were like 3 or 4 bucks for a can of “good soup”.
Now the recipe for REAL homemade soup…well that’s an entirely different thing.

Never really made any tomato soup. You’ve got me interested in trying though. I make all my own spaghetti sauces though from ripe tomatoes. Ragu is unnacceptable. :smack:
I think I’ll do that. It sounds good.

(Then some nights it might’ve been steak or ice cream or whatever…ya know what I mean?)

Silly unsolicited tip: Whenever I break a glass and get lots of little tiny shards, I take a piece of bread and pat the area where it broke (or where I know there to be fragments). Picks up the glass beautifully, even bits you didn’t see at first, and better than sweeping them up with a broom, where inevitably a piece will get lodged in the bristles and fall out somewhere else.

Not always 100% effective, but still the most effective I’ve found.

Oh and… don’t eat the bread

picking up small shards and slivers of glass…just another one of the many uses for duct tape

This morning I dropped a Cheeto® on the floor. I was just about to throw it away when I realized, anything it picked up from the floor most likely made it MORE healthy rather than less.

:o I love Campbell’s canned tomato soup
(I also love circus peanuts but that’s another story)

But just so you don’t think less of me I’ll share “Knock Your Socks Off Chicken Soup” aka “Sopa de Polla” a recipe I figured out from a local resaurant’s specialty and made from scratch for years. Pressed for time one day I improvised and the smartinis gobbled it up and I didn’t have to handle raw food   can’t get better than that!

Saute that packet of seasoning veggies you spoke of in a little olive oil, add 3-4 cans chicken stock. Bring to a boil and add 1 package of yellow saffron rice. When the rice is cooked add the meat from one de-boned rotisserie chicken. Add more broth to the desired “soup” consistency. Top each serving with cilantro, red onion and avocado and squeeze a little lime over all. Toss a bag of good tortilla chips on the table and step back. Now here is the best part. Refrigerate the leftovers and a day or so later thaw a package of frozen green peas and simmer it all together. If you want add in some additional red peppers and black olives. Yum again

Sorry for the hijack, just so it is not a complete hijack remember if you get rowdy and the chips hit the floor:
the 5-second rule applies as always
