Although I believe it was inappropriate of Justin rip off Janet’s shirt, exposing her breast, nipple brooch and all…I certainly don’t feel entitled to monetary compensation.
Ya know? Even though she’s a crackpot moron, she IS speaking for all Americans (how nice of her  ). Maybe I can get a piece of that settlement.
It’s not likely it will go to court. If it does, it means that this country will have officially lost its collective mind*–and I’ll move to Canada.
Because it would discourage those who have potentially meritorious claims from coming forward, particularly those who may have claims against the big and powerful. Think about a toxic tort kind of case. “OK, Mrs. P, you may well have a claim that your child’s extensive birth defects are the result of ChemicalCo pumping toxic sludge into your drinking water supply. But first, there will be extensive court proceedings, and if the judge finds that the birth defects weren’t ChemicalCo’s fault, you will be on the hook for ChemicalCo’s attorneys’ fees. And they’re going to hire the best and most expensive lawyers in the state. I figure you have a 70% chance of winning, and 30% chance of losing, but if you lose, you could be on the hook for $1 million or more.”
“Loser pays” = the rich and powerful get more license to do what they want, when they want, to whomever they want, knowing that the cost of the lawyers they can afford to hire will be a strong disincentive to anyone filing suit.
Most states and the federal courts have a simple motion to dismiss procedure that takes care of claims like this.
I would like to thank, on behalf of the peoples of the world outside the USA, Janet Jackson and the general American public for providing a never ending source of amusement this last week.
It’s also been a fascinating glimpse into the morals of the average US citizen. Start a war on a flimsy pretext; no problem. Flash a breast in a feeble publicity scam; it’s either the end of the world or the most exciting event in the history of mankind ever!!!
Now, it’s all been very amusing, but, please, enough. The show has got to end.
And if I see just one more “I’m outraged, I want to see both titties” “joke” I may really lose the plot.
Good. I am not afraid of big corporations in the least, there are enough Federal regulations to keep them in check from the really outrageous stuff. I am absolutely sick and disgusted at how much of my cost of living is determined by the money they must spend defending themselves against bullshit like this, passed along to me as increased costs for goods and services.
Who’s idea do you think it was to file the suit. All class actions suits first include provisions for paying the lawyers.
They’re the only ones that make anything. You think not----look at the Blockbuster Video settlement or the iOmega zip drive settlement. The lawyers get rich and the “public who got injured” get shit!
