Well, shit just got real.
(disclaimer, I’m not sure what set this off)
First of all, I should mention that Milwaukee, going way back, well before the recent news events about the riots and the ‘worst place to live if you’re black’ and all the other stuff going on, as long as I can remember, in certain parts of town, has been no stranger to shootings, random or otherwise.
This was last night. I was at a red light, half a block before getting on the freeway. As I was waiting for the light to turn green, I saw two MKE cops race through the intersection, didn’t think much of it. When the light turned green I looked to see where they were heading and saw 3 or 4 more on the side of the road at the nearest off ramp, about a block down*. I really didn’t think too much of it. When I cleared the intersection, I saw a fire truck and an ambulance pass behind me. I just sort of assumed it was an accident scene. When I got to my destination, I pulled up one of the local news websites on my phone. Turns out it was a [possible] road rage incident and one person shot into the other car and hit a 2 month old baby. I say “possible” and that I’m not sure what actually set this off because the witness’ statement, the way it’s presented in the article, doesn’t seem like the journalist is so sure. Even if what the witness said is accurate, it might not have been road rage, but something due to a previous dispute.
This is hardly the first time there’s been a shooting on the** freeway.
*If anyone watches The Profit and saw the one about The Soup Market in Milwaukee, FWIW, the investigation scene happened about 2 blocks from the spot where they went to look at the tomatoes and try to convince the owner to buy seconds.
**In the case where the kid shot the mother, there was a lot of shit talking about the gun in the car and the kid not being in a child seat. It came out a few days later that the mother had just had her car stolen the night before and was driving her boyfriend’s car. In her defense, in the few hours between when her car was stolen the night before and that morning she had no chance to get a new car seat (or multiple ones, she had 3 kids in the car) and she had no idea that her boyfriend (a security guard) had a gun in the car. Precautions and all that, but what’s done is done.
ETA
A)the tomato guy on that show is a very good friend…they pronounced his name wrong
B)I wish people could at least wait until they get off the road until they shoot each other.
C)A while back one of my employees was out on a delivery, shooting on the freeway, he got caught up in the traffic. I still remember him walking back in and saying ‘sorry I took so long, I didn’t know we were playing GTA today’. I thought it [the joke] was funny.
